2011/12 San Diego Chargers Handicapping

This team was extremely hard to handicap last season, as it had the No. 1 ranked offense in the league in total yards and was second in scoring with an average of 27.6 points a game.

Chargers Super Bowl Lines & Predictions

Couple this with a defense that was ranked first in total yards allowed and you would figure you were looking at a Super Bowl champion. One of the most telling facts of this team was a minus six turnover ratio that cost it dearly in quite a few close games.

The Chargers will look to bounce back in 2011 behind quarterback Philip Rivers, who returns for his eighth season with the team. The stability he brings at that position will undoubtedly help this team overcome a lack of preparation due to the prolonged player lockout this offseason.

The offense remains littered with a wealth of talent at the skill positions. While there is little doubt about the potency of this team’s passing game, it will need to get some better production from a rushing attack that was ranked 15th in the NFL last year. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

It was a running back-by-committee approach last season with Mike Tolbert and Ryan Mathews getting the majority of the carries along with Darren Sproles adding some speed on the outside in a supporting role.

San Diego Head Coach Norv Turner decided to use this year’s draft to bolster the defense by using four of his first five picks for that side of the ball.

The Chargers selected DT Cory Liuget from Illinois with the 18th overall pick to add some depth to an already talented front seven.

Cornerbacks Marcus Gilchrist and Shareece Wright were added in the second and third rounds to make one of the top defensive secondaries in the league that much better.

With the amount of talent currently on this roster along with the potential of adding a few key free agents in the weeks to come, there is little reason think that not only will the Chargers reclaim their top spot in the AFC West this season, but seriously contend for the AFC conference title as well.
