It took a special contingent of players to travel down to Mississippi to drag him off his tractor, but 19 year veteran quarterback Brett Favre is back for a 20th season and his second with Minnesota. In 2009 he statistically had the best year of his career, throwing for 4,202 yards and 33 TD’s while only being intercepted seven times.

He led his team to a 12-4 record and all the way to the NFC Championship game where they lost to New Orleans Saints 31-28.

With Favre back at the helm the Vikings have all the tools to make another long run this year. RB Adrian Peterson remains the main force behind the ground game.

Last season he ran for 1,383 yards on 314 carries for an average of 4.4 yards per attempt.

This was actually down a bit from 2008 when he ran for a career high 1,760 yards, but still impressive in its own right. They will also have second round draft pick Toby Gerhart to take some of pressure off of Peterson from time to time.

The receiving corps is led by WR’s Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin along with TE Vinsanthe Shiancoe. Rice led the team with 83 receptions for 1,312 yards. Harvin added another 60 catches for 790 yards while Shiancoe led the team in receiving touchdowns with 11.

The health of Harvin, who continues to suffer from migraines and actually collapsed at practice the other day, is a major concern.

If he is lost for the season, expect WR Bernard Berrian to be called on to help fill the void.

The Vikings defense will once again be led by its front four. Pat Williams and Kevin Williams (no relation) are two immoveable forces at the tackle position and DE Jared Allen is a QB’s worst nightmare. In 2009 this defense was ranked 19th against the pass, second against the run, and sixth overall.

The addition of first round draft pick CB Chris Cook should help improve the secondary while fourth round pick DE Everson Griffen and fifth rounder Nathan Triplett adds some depth to the front seven.

Last season Minnesota was a perfect 8-0 straight up at home and 4-4 on the road. It went 5-1 in the division including two wins over their nearest competitor; Green Bay. Against the spread, the Vikings were 9-6-1; 5-2-1 at home and 4-4 on the road.

While many experts believe that the return of Favre makes the Vikings immediate Super Bowl contenders but there a few cracks in the foundation that could actually take this team in a downward direction this year.

The first is Favre himself. Last season everything went right and he was able to stay healthy for all 18 games he played. He will be 41 years old this October and the chances of that happening again are in serious doubt.

Another is the potential loss of Harvin. He was a vital part of the Vikings success last year by providing key plays at crucial times in the game.

A final area of concern is their secondary. Teams proved that you can throw the ball on the secondary and their schedule is loaded with pass happy teams like New Orleans, Dallas, Philadelphia, New England, and Green Bay (twice).

2010 Prediction: 2nd in the NFC North
