He immediately used the team’s favorable position in the draft to stockpile some young talent and developed his offensive game plan around quarterback Matt Cassel, who was acquired in a trade with New England.

Chiefs Super Bowl Lines & Predictions

The results were not immediate with just four wins in his first season, but things came together quickly in last year’s surprising 10-6 campaign that earned the upstart Chiefs an AFC West division title.

The reason for continued optimism heading into this season is an offense that was ranked No.1 in running the ball behind Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones and a defense that was ranked 11th in points allowed. Cassel has shown flashes of brilliance in his two seasons with the Chiefs, but he will have to develop better consistency to improve a passing attack that was ranked 30th in the league with an average of just 219.9 yards per game.

The addition of wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin from Pittsburgh with the 26th overall pick in this year’s draft should help his cause, but Cassel needs to raise a completion rate that was less than 60 percent in 2009 and 2010. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Haley used this year’s draft to build some depth on defense after adding cornerback Eric Berry in the first round of the 2010 draft. One of the biggest steals could have been outside linebacker Gabe Miller from Oregon State with the ninth pick in the fifth round.

At 6-foot-3 and 257 pounds, Miller has some tremendous play-making skills for a player of his size.

Defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel has done an excellent job at instilling a ball-hawking culture on this squad as the Chiefs forced 18 fumbles last season and picked-off 14 passes, ending the season with one of the best turnover ratios in the league at plus nine.

Kansas City remains a team to watch in 2011 and offers some tremendous value in its current odds. If the Chiefs can find a way to improve upon a 2-4 record in the division and a conference record of 6-6, they might be able to hold off San Diego for the division title for the second year in-a-row.

The key dates on the schedule are a Week 3 road game against the Chargers and a Week 9 meeting with San Diego at Arrowhead.

I agree with the Schwab. KC will again be the team that will generate excitement in the AFC West.
