Despite finishing with only two wins, last season has to be seen as a step in the right direction after Detroit went winless in 2008. With the first pick of the 2009 draft the Lions selected quarterback Matthew Stafford.

After a baptism by fire his rookie year, Stafford showed signs that he has what it takes to be a big time QB in the NFL.

With the second overall pick in this year’s draft, the Lions are hoping they found the cornerstone to their defense by selecting DT Ndamukong Suh. Through two years of high draft picks Detroit has definitely elevated the talent level of its team. It should only be a matter of time before the Lions can capitalize on all this talent in the form of winning games.

If you look at the offensive numbers from last year, things look pretty bleak for the Lions. They ended the 2009 season with the league’s 26th ranked offense.

Their passing game was ranked 21st and their rushing offense was ranked 24th.

If you look closer you find that despite being under constant pressure, Stafford was able to steadily improve as the season wore on. WR Calvin Johnson finished the year with 984 receiving yards on 67 receptions and RB Kevin Smith had 747 rushing yards on 217 carries. All three of these players have three or less seasons in the league and should only improve with time.

The Lions also added RB Javid Best with their second round pick which adds another solid skill position player to this group.

Defensively the 2009 season was a disaster for the Lions. They finished the year ranked dead last in the league in total defense; 25th against the run and 32nd against the pass. With these kinds of numbers the good news is that you have nowhere to go but up.

The addition of Suh along with this year’s third round pick CB Amari Spievey and DE Lawrence Jackson, a former first round pick by Seattle, is a step in the right direction as they continue to upgrade themselves in key positions.

Last season Detroit was 2-6 straight up at home and 0-8 on the road. With a 3-29 road record over the past four seasons it is imperative that the Lions find a way to be more competitive away from Ford Field.

Against the spread they went 4-10-2; 3-5 at home and 1-5-2 on the road.

In looking at the Lions schedule they have winnable games against St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Buffalo, and possibly at home against Washington and Chicago.

While they will not compete for a playoff spot, the over on the win total could be a solid bet.

2010 Prediction: 4th in the NFC North
Win Total: OVER

The Lions are due for a fresh start and hopefully, they can get their act together this time. The team has been in the doldrums long enough.
