With a new head coach and a chaotic offseason, the expectations for Denver were fairly low heading into the 2009 season. In a shocking start, they proceeded to win their first six games and appeared on their way to an unlikely division title in the AFC West. After a humiliating 30-7 loss to Baltimore in week eight, reality began to set in and the Broncos stumbled to a 2-8 finish that left them with a .500 record and out of the playoffs.

As they enter the 2010 season it is hard to know what to expect from this team. Will they play like they did in the first half of the season or like they did down the stretch? In actuality it will most likely be somewhere in between. Josh McDaniels survived his first year as coach and has shown the ability to be a motivator as well as a teacher. There is a solid nucleus of talent with a good blend of both young and veteran players. The trick will be their ability to develop better consistency from one week to the next.

QB Kyle Orton will once again be the starter as he has proven to be an unspectacular but capable player at the pro level. He finished the season with 3,802 passing yards, completing 62.1% of his attempts. He threw for 21 TD’s against 12 interceptions for a passer rating of 86.8.

One major loss on offense will be WR Brandon Marshall, who was traded to Miami back in April. Even though he wanted to be traded before last season, he ended the year with 101 receptions for 1,120 yards. That production will be hard to replace with their current core of receivers. They have to hope that first round pick, WR Demaryius Thomas can quickly adapt to the pro game.

Much of the offseason chatter about Denver has revolved around them using their other pick in the first round to select QB Tim Tebow. Even though he is currently listed as third on the depth chart, do not be surprised if they find a way to work him into the lineup for some wildcat type plays.

The Broncos defense had numerous lapses last season but still finished the season ranked seventh overall and 12th in total points allowed. While they were ranked third against the pass they had trouble stopping the run, ending up ranked 26th in rushing yards allowed. Since they primarily used the draft to address the offensive side of the ball, they will be going with pretty much the same roster as last year. They did add LB Akin Ayodele as a free agent from Miami and resigned DE Elvis Dumervil to a restricted free agent tender.

Denver has enough talent to remain competitive in the AFC West as long as they can avoid the mental breakdowns on both sides of the ball that plagued them the second half of last season. They will certainly not be the flashiest team in the AFC, but should be able grind it out with just about anyone each week.

2010 Prediction: 2nd in the AFC West
Win Total: Over
