The Dallas Cowboys past struggles down the stretch of the regular season had been well documented, but after winning their final three games in 2009 to lock up the NFC East title, they are hoping they have finally put all that behind them.

Heading into the 2010 season, expectations are not only high for another East title, but for a rare opportunity to be the home team in the Super Bowl as this year’s big game will be played in Dallas Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, TX. in early February. Right now it appears that the Cowboys have all the tools on both sides of the ball to actually make that happen.

Eight year veteran QB Tony Romo is coming off his best year as a starter and with a full complement of weapons surrounding him, has a great opportunity to make 2010 even better. Romo finished 2009 ranked third in the league with 4,483 passing yards. He completed 63.1 percent of his throws and had 26 TD’s against just nine interceptions.

One of the biggest reasons for Romo’s success was the emergence of Miles Austin as a legitimate No. 1 receiver. Austin led the team with 81 receptions for 1,320 yards and 11 TD’s. With fellow WR’s Roy E. Williams and first round pick Dez Bryant along with TE Jason Witten, the Cowboys passing game should once again be one of the best in the league.

The rushing attack will be led by a trio of backs; Felix Jones, Marion Barber, and Tashard Choice. Last season Barber led the team with 932 rushing yards on 214 carries, but all three should have plenty of chances to run the ball in 2010.

On the defensive side of the ball, the biggest question marks are still in the Cowboy secondary. In 2009, their defense was ranked ninth overall and fourth against the run, but just 20th against the pass.

Their ability to put consistent pressure on the quarterback with just their front four will go a long way toward improving their overall pass coverage schemes.

They also drafted CB Akwasi Owusa-Ansah in the fourth round to add some depth.

Last season Dallas went 6-2 straight up at home and 5-3 on the road. The Cowboys were 4-2 in the division. They lost to the Giants twice but beat the Eagles twice, including a 24-0 shutout that earned them the division title in the final game of the regular season. Against the spread they were 9-7; 5-3 at home and 4-3 on the road.

There is little doubt that talent-wise Dallas is the class of the NFC East. With players like Romo, Austin, and Whiten on offense and a run-stuffing front seven on defense there is no reason that team should not repeat as division champions.

The only thing that could get in the Cowboys way is themselves. With an impatient owner like Jerry Jones and intense scrutiny by the media, the players will be under constant pressure to win it all from the opening day kickoff against the Redskins.

Head Coach Wade Phillips never lives with any kind of long term job security as Jones has the ultimate “what have you done for me today” attitude towards everyone on his team.

None the less, the talent gap between this team and the rest of the East should be wide enough to overcome a few mistakes along the way.

2010 Prediction: 1st in the NFC East
Win Total: OVER
