After a heart breaking last second loss to Denver in their 2009 season opener, you had to believe that Cincinnati’s luck had still not changed and they were destined to endure another long year.

In surprising fashion, the team responded by winning seven of their next eight games including two wins against division rival Baltimore and two more against Pittsburgh to take a commanding lead in the AFC North.

While the Bengals did finish 6-0 in the North and 10-6 overall, winning their first division title since 2005, their season ended on a sour note with a 24-14 loss at home to the Jets in the Wildcard round of the playoffs.

The Bengals come into the 2010 season loaded with optimism, but if they play the way they did down the stretch last year, it will be right back to their losing ways.

Eight year veteran Carson Palmer remains Cincinnati’s primary weapon on offense, as when healthy, he is still one of the better QB’s in the league. Last season Palmer started all 16 games, throwing for 3,094 yards on 466 attempts. He ended the year with 21 TD passes against 13 interceptions and had a passer rating of 83.6. These certainly were not the best numbers of his career, but the fact that played every game was an encouraging sight.

Chad Ochocinco remains the primary receiving threat having led the team with 72 receptions for 1,042 yards in 2009. He will be joined by WR Andre Caldwell and Laveranues Coles to form a solid trio of players for Palmer to get the ball to. Add in WR Antonio Bryant, who signed as a free agent from Tampa along with first round draft pick TE Jemaine Gresham and third round pick WR Jordan Shipley and the Bengals should definitely improve a passing offense that was ranked 26th in the league last year.

Do not be surprised if Cincinnati signs free agent WR Terrell Owens to a one year deal which will make things really interesting with this already colorful cast of characters.

The Bengals also have one of the best RB’s in the league in Cedric Benson. Benson rushed for 1,251 yards on 301 carries in 2009, easily the best performance of his five year career. Cincinnati’s rushing offense finished the season ranked ninth, averaging 128.5 yards per game, so expect running the ball to remain the primary focus of this offense.

One area that the Bengals were solid right across the board was on defense. They finished the 2009 season ranked fourth in overall defense, sixth in average points per game allowed, sixth in passing defense, and seventh against the run. With the addition of second round pick DE Carlos Dunlap and fourth round pick DT Geno Atkins they have added some much needed depth up front.

One thing that will be very difficult for this team to do this year is go 6-0 within the division. They are capable of beating everybody once, but with the exception of Cleveland, they will be hard pressed to pull off this feat again. This coupled with the fact they have Indianapolis, New Orleans, San Diego, and New York (Jets) on their schedule as .500 season at best seems likely for this team.

2010 Prediction: 2nd in the AFC North
