Aided by the remarkable play of a rookie quarterback, Atlanta won 11 games in 2008 and made the playoffs. Suffering through a bit of a sophomore slump, QB Matt Ryan took a step backwards last season as the Falcons still managed to win nine games but did not qualify for the postseason. Anticipation for the 2010 season is running high as many experts believe that Ryan is poised to lead this team past New Orleans in the NFC South.

Much of Atlanta’s success this season will undoubtedly revolve around the play of Matt Ryan. In 2008 he threw for 3,440 yards and completed 61.1 percent of his passes. He ended his rookie campaign with a quarterback rating of 87.7. Last season he threw for 2,916 yards and completed only 58.3 percent of his attempts. His rating dropped as well, finishing up at 80.9. After rededicating himself this offseason to getting bigger and stronger, Ryan is drawing some lofty comparisons to a young Tom Brady as he enters his third season in the NFL.

Another strength of this offense is Ryan’s supporting cast. WR Roddy White and TE Tony Gonzalez are his biggest targets in the passing game. White was the team’s leading receiver last year with 85 receptions for 1,183 yards and Gonzalez was right behind him with 83 catches for 867 yards. Another solid receiver is Michael Jenkins but he is expected to miss the first few games of the season with a shoulder injury.

RB Michael Turner gives the Falcons the ability to create the perfect balance between running and throwing the ball. Turner added 871 yards on the ground and FB Jason Snelling ran for 613 yards as well.

If the Falcons are to have any chance to seriously compete for their division they will have to do a much better job on the defensive side of the ball. Last year they finished ranked 21st overall; 10th against the run but 28th against the pass. In an effort to address the weakness in the secondary, Atlanta signed CB Dunta Robinson as an unrestricted free agent from Houston.

It also used the 19th overall pick in the draft to select LB Sean Witherspoon who has exceptional speed and playmaking ability.

Atlanta was 6-2 straight up last year but just 3-5 on the road. The Falcons went 3-3 in the division including an eight point loss to the Saints in New Orleans and a three point loss to them at home. The Falcons were 11-5 against the spread; 6-2 at home and 5-3 on the road.

While this team still has some gaps in their defensive secondary, they may be able to compensate for this with their ability to put enough points on the board to pull out some high scoring wins.

I expect Atlanta to keep things much closer with New Orleans this year in the NFC South, but not close enough to overtake them.

2010 Prediction: 2nd in the NFC South
