This Sunday’s game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers in Dallas has the makings of a classic; the biggest game featuring two storied franchises both peaking at the right time. The teams faced a difficult road to get to the Super Bowl and both have two consummate signal-callers under center – Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger and Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers – who can surgically extract a victory.

For Green Bay’s part, Rodgers was basically flawless in the postseason until the NFC Championship versus the rival Chicago Bears, where he came back to Earth, throwing a couple of picks and being merely very good. What has spiced up Green Bay’s recent dominance is its sudden emergence of a ground game; rookie RB James Starks has played very well in the playoffs, buttressed by Brandon Jackson and the hard-nosed John Kuhn.

With a defense perhaps not as top-to-bottom impressive as the Steel Curtain, the Pack still have every important aspect of a great unit – an effective pass-rush with LB Clay Matthews, thick-bodied run-stuffing with beefy DT B.J. Raji, and a dangerous secondary led by CB Charles Woodson and S Nick Collins.

What the Packers don’t have is Pittsburgh’s recent Super Bowl-winning pedigree. Roethlisberger and a good chunk of his teammates have proven they can reach the summit, snagging two Lombardi Trophies in the past five seasons. The Steelers’ passing attack is a little less turbo-charged than their Wisconsin counterparts, yet they still bring every requisite to the table to be one of the marquee picks year in and year out.

Pittsburgh’s O-line would be one area of some concern, but Big Ben has proven to be so adept at eluding the rush (and so massive that he’s tough to bring down even when he’s captured) that even that, often, won’t affect the team’s big picture. A physical run game and one of the legendary blitzing schemes in the sport’s history are hallmarks of Steelers football. If that weren’t enough, Defensive Player of the Year Troy Polamalu should be back from injury for the Super Bowl match-up.

Even if pivots like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and perhaps soon, Aaron Rodgers achieve greatness more single-handedly than Roethlisberger, one can’t argue with his success. A win this Sunday would only further cement that legacy. In Green Bay, the small community has been hungry for glory since Brett Favre steered the ship over New England in Super Bowl XXXI.

This Packers squad has the talent to satiate the fans.

Though tricky to predict because neither of these teams are fluky, the Packers may have trouble sustaining their running prowess against Pittsburgh’s famed “D”. Though Rodgers is on the cusp of “best in the league” status and surely has next following some more tread on the tires of Brady and Manning, he’s going up against a team that specializes in getting – and maintaining – momentum.

It’s all about performing in crunch time, and Pittsburgh has been doing it often in recent seasons.
