Minnesota

With the win over Dallas last week the Vikings are in better shape heading into this week’s battle with division rival Green Bay.  It wasn’t the most impressive victory as they were outgained by more than 100 yards but in a battle of desperate teams they were able to get the victory.  They will be playing another desperate team in the Packers this week.  GB needs a win or else they will be in third place  in the NFC North after the weekend.

The disappointments for the Vikings this season have been primarily on the offensive side of the ball.  Meanwhile, the defense has been very good, ranking 5th in yards allowed and 7th in points allowed.  It is safe to say that if the Vikings were getting just average play on offense they would be above .500 right now…but Brett Favre hasn’t even been that good.

Last year the Vikings took both games in the series, winning each by more than a touchdown.  Favre was superb in his return to Green Bay throwing for 4 TDs while leading a 12 point victory.  Heading into this one it is hard to know what kind of performance you are going to get from him  but Randy Moss is back with the Vikings and you can bet he is itching to make a few plays in his old stomping grounds.

With him around Favre’s margin for error definitely goes up.

Green Bay

After the Cowboys and Vikings, the Packers might be the most disappointing team around.  Sure they have had some critical injuries but their losses to Washington and Miami the last two weeks, both in overtime, were dismal and they almost coughed up the game against Detroit too.  This week’s game is a big one on so many fronts and they need a better effort from the players that are healthy and playing.

Included among those for this week, at least it looks that way now, is rush linebacker Clay Matthews.  As of this moment he is probable for Sunday and he can help the rest of the defense deal with other losses if he continues his ferocious play.  Dude is averaging more than a sack a game and without him and a few others the defense has been ho-hum the last few weeks.

Green Bay needs more from its defense because the offense is struggling.  With the loss of Ryan Grant, and now JerMichael Finley, two important weapons have been taken away from Aaron Rodgers.  He is also feeling a lot of heat on the rush and his completion percentage is way down as a result.  Sure he is piling up yards but drives are stalling after a couple of first downs instead of being completed for TDs.  Minnesota has won the last three overall and that can’t sit well with the Packers or their fans.  Maybe the 12th man can help will the team to a much needed victory.

The Pick: These teams are both scuffling but at home and at night it is hard not to back the Packers.  If Favre was feeling great it might have been a different story but the Pack should win a close ball game.
