Green Bay
The Packers have been looking very good the last four weeks, winning four in a row with a combination of improved offense and excellent defense. The Jets may not be a juggernaut offensively but it was very impressive how the Pack shut them out on the road. Green Bay is tied with Chicago atop the NFC North and looks poised for a postseason run where they just might hook up with this week opponent again.
In the past two weeks QB Aaron Rodgers has thrown 7 TDs with no interceptions. In addition to helping fantasy teams he seems to finally be in the kind of groove most were expecting the entire season. He has been doing it with a shortened deck too. TE Jermichael Finley is on IR and veteran WR Donald Driver has been out as well. It will be interesting to see how much success a Falcons defense that gives up a lot of yards through the air will manage against Rodgers and Co on Sunday.
These teams last met in 2008, a 27-24 victory by the Falcons at Green Bay. The Packers will look to return the favour by beating Atlanta on the road. A win would tie these two teams at the top of the NFC standings and put pressure on the Bears to keep up. It is a short spread this week so it looks like oddsmakers think these teams are pretty close to each other right now with Atlanta gaining an advantage from playing at home.
Atlanta
The Falcons are currently sitting at the top of the NFC standings and a win over Green Bay would further pad their position. They also have won four games in a row and know that they must continue their winning ways with resurgent New Orleans and surprising Tampa Bay nipping at their heels. The NFC playoff picture is pretty bunched up right now and this game will influence things moving forward big time.
This is an important game for Atlanta because after this week they hit the road for three straight. The Falcons have a very balanced attack that has them ranked 7th overall in yardage gained. The key is a ground game led by Michael Turner, who helps them grind out games in the fourth quarter. Matt Ryan is enjoying a nice season and the offensive balance means he can choose the right spots to bomb away to WR Roddy White.
The Falcons are a perfect 5-0 at home this season. Despite that success they are only 3-2 ATS, so they don’t always dominate under the dome. This should be one of the better games of the season and the winner can lay claim to being the best team in the NFC. It will be interesting to see who wants that title the most.
The Pick: I like the Packers to disrupt the Falcons groove. Clay Matthews should be hard to handle on the fast turf.
