The atmosphere at Mile High will most likely be solemn this weekend, as the Broncos mournfully play their first game following the tragic suicide of teammate Kenny McKinley earlier this week.

Nevertheless, they will need to focus, as they will get no extra sympathy from reigning NFL MVP Peyton Manning and a Colt’s team that is trying to extend their winning streak to two in a row after losing their season opener at Houston.

Manning, who leads the league in passing yards (688) and touchdowns (6) and hasn’t thrown an interception, will try to take advantage of a potentially depleted Denver secondary that could be without nine-time Pro Bowl CB Champ Bailey, who was on crutches after last Sunday’s win over Seattle, and Andre Goodman who is battling a thigh injury.

The eldest Manning outgunned the younger brother Eli, going 20 of 26 for 255 yards and three TDs as the reigning AFC champions bounced back with a 38-14 win over the New York Giants last Sunday night.

Meanwhile, quarterback Kyle Orton has been a pleasant surprise for the Broncos who opted to go with the six-year man over first round draft pick Tim Tebow. He has cemented head coach Josh McDaniels’ decision to give him the starting role by being one of six NFL players with at least 600 passing yards this season

Orton’s performance against the Seahawks last Sunday was impressive, going 25 of 35 for 307 yards and a pair of TDs including one to rookie Demaryius Thomas, who had eight catches for 97 yards during a remarkable NFL debut.

But it’s the Broncos defense that will have to play well if they hope to slow down Manning, who has totaled 19 TD passes in his last five consecutive wins over Denver.

Something the Colts haven’t had since the Edgerrin James era ended in 2005, is an effective running game with Joseph Addai and Donald Brown. The backfield bandits combined for 161 rushing yards and one rushing TD against the Giants.

The pair could see a repeat of last week’s events as they look to exploit the Denver run stoppers who are surrendering whopping 122 yards per game.

Similarly, the Colts D is ranked dead last in the league giving up 188 yards on the ground, including 257 in their Week 1 loss to the Texans.

This could be the breakout game that Denver RB Knowshon Moreno has been waiting for, as the first round Georgia draft pick will look to add to his two TDs on 39 carries for 11 yards over the last two weeks.

As much as it would be fitting for Denver to rally in the wake of an emotional week, I just cannot see an injury plagued secondary shutting down the Colts potent passing attack.
