NFL 2010 Pro Bowl- Betting Review

The 2010 NFL Pro Bowl will be played this Sunday night, January 31st in Dolphins Stadium, the site of Super Bowl XLIV, which will be played between Indianapolis and New Orleans the following week, Sunday February 7th.

In an experiment that has yet to be proven as favorable, the NFL decided to move this game up two weeks as it was traditionally played the week following the Super Bowl.

What this does is prevent players like Peyton Manning and Dallas Clark from the Colt’s and Drew Brees, and Jonathan Vilma from the Saints from playing, but it does allow for a number of new faces to get a chance to play. Analyzing the players that will be suiting up, here is a brief preview of the game.

AFC vs. NFC (-2)
Current Over/Under 57

For the AFC; Manning, Tom Brady, and Philip Rivers are out, and Matt Schaub, Vince Young, and David Garrard are in at quarterback. For the NFC; Brees and Brett Favre are out, and Aaron Rodgers, Tony Romo, and Donovan McNabb are in. In light of these changes I give the slight edge to the NFC.

At running back; Chris Johnson, Maurice Jones-Drew and Ray Rice will carry the ball for the AFC, while Adrian Peterson, DeAngelo Williams, and Frank Gore get the call for the NFC. While I do not expect a whole lot of running in this game, the advantage here would clearly go to the AFC.

The wide receivers for the AFC are; Andre Johnson, Brandon Marshall, Chad Ochocinco, and Vincent Jackson. For the NFC you have; DeSean Jackson, Mile Austin, Sidney Rice, and Steve Smith. This is almost a tossup, but once again I give a slight edge to the NFC.

Antonio Gates and Heath Miller are the tight ends for the AFC and Jason Witten and Vernon Davis are in for the NFC.  Another close one but I’ll give the edge to the NFC.

Since the amended rules for the Pro Bowl extremely favor the offense because no one wants to get hurt in a game like this; defense is not a dominating factor in this game. One area that would have an impact is the defensive secondary. The AFC has Darrell Revis and Champ Bailey at the corners and safeties Ed Reed and Yeremiah Bell, while the NFC will go with Asante Samuel and Terence Newman at the corners and Nick Collins and Adrian Wilson in the safety spots. The advantage here clearly goes to the AFC.

If the game comes down to a field goal, I give the edge to David Akers and the NFC, since the AFC’s kicker is San Diego’s Nate Kaeding, who still has to be reeling over missing three very makeable attempts in a three point loss to the Jets in the playoffs.

My pick: the NFC -2 and the OVER (57).
