Broncos vs. Ravens: Week 5 NFL Lines & Spread Prediction

Point spread, ATS odds, and moneyline betting and preview article for the 2010 NFL Week 5 clash between the Denver Broncos vs. Baltimore Ravens…

Sunday Broncos vs Ravens NFL Betting – Orton In For A Bumpy Ride In Baltimore

The Denver Broncos are coming off a thrilling 26-20 comeback win over the Tennessee Titans last week, evening their record at 2-2 on the season. What made the win more surprising is that the Broncos rushed for only 19 yards in the entire contest. Full credit for the Broncos success goes to Kyle Orton, who has been one of the NFL’s best passes in 2010.

The Baltimore Ravens are also coming off of a win and like Denver it took a late touchdown to do it. Joe Flacco hit T.J. Houshmandzadeh for a touchdown with under a minute left to defeat the Steelers 17-14. The win was Flacco’s first ever in Pittsburgh and improved their 2010 season record to 3-1.

How Can Denver Win?

Instead of whining when his team acquired Brady Quinn and drafted Tim Tebow, Orton has responded with a start to the season that resembles Denver great John Elway. Obviously Orton isn’t that good, but according to the early season numbers (1419 passing yards leads all NFL quarterbacks), maybe a comparison isn’t that far off.

But Denver needs their rushing attack to improve or it’s not going to be easy. The Broncos rank dead last in rushing offense, averaging just 55 yards per game and road trips don’t exactly cure those woes – especially to Baltimore. Knowshon Moreno is still battling injuries and isn’t confirmed to start this weekend. Laurence Maroney has been ineffective since joining Denver, and Correll Buckhalter isn’t doing much better.

The Ravens run defense is giving up an un-Raven-like 115 yards per game. This is Denver’s opportunity to find some balance on the road and get a win.

Why Can Baltimore Win?

Baltimore has to make sure their pass defense will hold up. The Ravens own the league’s number one pass defense and are playing the best passing team in the NFL. Orton is playing out of his mind and it’s up to the Baltimore secondary to bring him back to earth.

A healthy Ray Rice isn’t essential, but it wouldn’t hurt. Although Willis McGahee is a serviceable backup, he’s still a backup. Rice is proven to be a full-game back but injuries have limited his effectiveness since the offseason. Denver’s rush defense is pretty average, allowing just over 100 yards per game in 2010. Baltimore was limited to only 70 yards of rushing offense last week; that number can improve at home against the Broncos.

Outlook

This is just a tough spot for Denver. This will be their second consecutive road game and last week, they needed a fourth quarter miracle just to survive.

Now they head to Baltimore, who may experience a bit of a hangover after the Pittsburgh win but they are up to task. They have the No. 1 pass defense in the league going up against an offense that is one dimensional.

The Broncos will try to run early and fail. Then, when they put the game on Orton’s arm, he’s going to get thrashed by the Ravens front seven. Even though it’s a matchup of two relatively close teams record-wise, the Ravens will win this one rather easily.
