I see three teams (WVU, USF and Pitt) with a reasonable shot at winning the conference this year even though all of these teams have question marks in key areas.

Big East Conference 2011 – Odds to Win Conference

West Virginia 9/5
South Florida 5/2
Pittsburgh 7/2
Cincinnati 7/1
Louisville 10/1
Syracuse 15/1
Rutgers 20/1
Connecticut 22/1

Starting at the top the key for West Virginia is how they adapt to new coach Dana Holgorsen. Amidst the off-field drama you have to remember that the Mountaineers are doing a 180 on offense.

They have the luxury of 5 non-conference games to get comfortable but there are no guarantees with Pitt and South Florida nipping at their heels waiting for a stumble

Best Bet – West Virginia

The Mountaineers are one of those teams who have to be really looking forward to being able to finally hit people. It has been a tumultuous off-season, and the on-field product will look different, but this is still the most talented team in a league full of mediocre talent for the most part.

As identified earlier I think the fact that they have a bunch of games to iron out some kinks really plays to their favour this year and if they can actually beat visiting LSU in September they might even be looking at a potential perfect season.

This team is not a juggernaut but they can be very good.

Best Value – West Virginia

It is rare that you get good value on a conference favourite but I think in this case almost 2/1 isn’t bad for the odds on choice. Especially so given that there is no championship game in the Big East to blow up your bet at the very end.

I am not a big fan of tying up your money so long for a relatively small payoff but compared to other conference front runners there is some decent value on West Virginia to win it.

Best Schedule – West Virginia/South Florida

I don’t know whether it is foreshadowing or not but these two teams will meet the last week of the season at South Florida. That could definitely give the Bulls an advantage but I am splitting the schedule nod here because West Virginia will have their traditional rivalry game – the Backyard Brawl – against Pittsburgh at home the week before.

If they don’t win that one then the outcome of the last week might not be as important.

Also their road dates are Syracuse, Connecticut and Cincinnati all very winnable games.

Prediction – West Virginia

I have to admit that picking West Virginia is as much gut as comprehensive analysis. The top three teams all have question marks with two – Pitt and WVU – with new coaches implementing new offensive systems that sometimes have growing pains in year one.

The other contender, USF, still has questions at QB and hasn’t been able to match expectations in the current or past regimes.

This year feels like the kind of year you should go with the name you know.
