One of the most prominent storylines of the upcoming season is the “return” of the Florida State Seminoles.

Things do appear to be on the rise at FSU but I am not convinced that this squad should is guaranteed to be the ACC Champion, and a dark horse BCS candidate if they shock the world and beat Oklahoma in September in Tallahassee.

Atlantic Coast Conference 2011 – Odds to Win Conference

Florida State 3/2
Virginia Tech 11/5
Miami Florida 9/2
North Carolina 7/1
Maryland 14/1
Clemson 16/1
Boston College 25/1
North Carolina State 28/1
Georgia Tech 40/1
Virginia 50/1
Wake Forest 125/1
Duke 150/1

The ACC has struggled on a national stage lately but inside the conference teams battle each other every week for supremacy and I think there are as many as nine teams that have a real shot at the championship given team strengths and schedules.

Almost every team in the conference has some questions at QB opening up the races in both divisions and ultimately the championship game in December.

Best Bet: Florida State

There are some very good reasons that the pundits are making the Seminoles the prohibitive favourites for the ACC crown. Top to bottom this is probably the most talented team in the conference and in a league full of quarterback newbies their new starter has more experience under his belt than about 6 other teams combined – and E.J. Manuel has performed well too.

Add that to what should be an intimidating defense and it is not hard to see why the oddsmakers really favour FSU. Their schedule should be pretty easy to tame with at most a single loss (Clemson?) occurring during the regular season, setting them up well to appear in the Championship Game.

It would be a surprise if they didn’t make it at least that far.

Best Value – North Carolina.

Butch Davis is a very good coach and the defense should be very stingy again this year, with a couple of players who will be drafted, maybe more.

If UNC can get just an average amount of production from their offense led by first year starting QB Bryn Renner then there is no team in the league they can’t compete with, especially if they are able to run the ball with their 245 pound running back Ryan Houston.

An upset by them and another by someone else is all it might take for them to reach the championship game. If they made it that far then they would have a shot at winning it. A 7/1 payoff isn’t bad.

Best Schedule – Virginia Tech

The key is examining which teams they face at home and who they get in the divisional cross over. This year both situations are very favourable with tough divisional opponents visiting Blacksburg (Miami, North Carolina), and crossover games with Wake Forest, Boston College and Georgia Tech – hardly a murderers row.

There is a very real possibility they are undefeated during conference play making their appearance in the title game a near certainty, again.

ACC Winner – Virginia Tech

Florida State may be getting all the publicity now but I think by the end of the season, when they meet in the Championship Game Virginia Tech will be the team to beat.

It will be a mild upset in a rematch of last year’s championship which VT won by 11.
