Baltimore

The expectations are extremely high for the Baltimore Ravens in 2010. Many experts are taking this team as their favorite to win the AFC Championship. It is the balance of this team that is so impressive. One of Baltimore’s biggest competitors for the AFC crown will be the New York Jets, who they take on in their season opener.

The young talent at the skill positions is key for the Baltimore Ravens. Joe Flacco has shown that he has the tools needed to be a successful quarterback in the NFL, and as long as he keeps developing, the Ravens will have one of the better leaders in the league. Ray Rice is quickly becoming one of the best running backs in the league. Rice is an extremely tough player who serves as double trouble because he can catch the ball so well out of the backfield. What about the new weapons at wide receiver? Both Anquan Boldin and TJ Houshmandzadeh are now part of the hold and I fully expect them to make this offense even more dangerous.

The Ravens defense was always their calling card through the early 2000’s, but many of those key players have started to age. The good news for Ravens fans is Baltimore has done a great job in drafting young guys to step up and help the veterans. Haloti Ngata is one of the best in the game at clogging up the line, and Terrance Cody should help as well. Ray Lewis is aging, but he is still a vocal leader and he still gets the job done at middle linebacker. The biggest concern is in the secondary, where the Ravens are short at the cornerback spot and Ed Reed’s injury problems are a big worry. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

New York

Rex Ryan and the Jets were just one win away from the Super Bowl in 2009, and Jets fans are expecting this team to be right in the thick of things again. The team clearly has a swagger to it right now, and they are counting on improving on last season’s impressive run.

The Jets offense is led by Mark Sanchez, but it is really all about the running game for this team. The Jets led the league in rushing offense last year, and they were great at controlling the football and wearing down the defense. Shonn Greene takes over the starting duties from Thomas Jones, and Greene looked like a back with all the skills necessary to be a consistently great runner for the Jets in 2010. The Jets signed LaDainian Tomlinson as a backup, so they do have some solid insurance in the form of a future Hall of Famer. Braylon Edwards is the top receiver until Holmes comes back from his suspension. The offensive line may be the best in football. This is a solid offense that should continue to progress.

The defense of the New York Jets is really what got them to where they were last year in the playoffs. The Jets rushing defense was the best in the league and they were great at buckling down and not allowing touchdowns in the red zone. The linebackers are amazing with Bart Scott and David Harris leading the way. The secondary should be terrific as Revis, Cromartie, and even rookie sensation Kyle Wilson will all be tough to get by. The Jets defense is loaded with talent and they should be one of the best in the league again.

The Pick

The Ravens probably have the better offense, but the Jets actually have a better defense than the Ravens right now. This should be a terrific matchup. The total is set so low, but I really do think the under is the play in this one. Expect a very hard fought entertaining football game here. I like under 35.5.

Baltimore vs. New York Score Prediction: New York 17 Baltimore 13
