The Arizona Cardinals found the win column last week but it wasn’t easy – or pretty. The defense picked off rookie Sam Bradford three times but also let him and the Rams drive on them. Tim Hightower, starting with Beanie Wells injured, ran for 54 yards and lost two fumbles.

The most glaring concern for Arizona is, of course Derek Anderson. His 297 passing yards, one touchdown and no picks last week don’t look so bad at first glance but those numbers don’t tell the real story.

Anderson completed just 53.7 per cent of his passes against a brutal Rams’ defense. He overthrew receivers all day. He connected with top target Larry Fitzgerald three times for 43 yards and a score but those three completions came on 15 targets. Ouch.

The Atlanta secondary and pass rush aren’t elite but they were competent at Pittsburgh last week and will test Anderson far more than the Rams did. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Atlanta Falcons (0-1)

Week 1 was disappointing for the Falcons but they aren’t panicking. Sure, Matt Ryan’s 252 yards weren’t anything special, but that came against a great pass defense led by Troy Polamalu. Sure, Michael Turner got totally bottled up on the ground, totalling just 42 yards on 19 carries, but the Steelers’ front seven is as good as any in the game.

The Falcons and their fans should only panic if Atlanta’s offense struggles at home against Arizona this week. The Cardinals do have some playmakers in the secondary in Adrian Wilson and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie but they still get beat regularly for big plays. Not only did they let a rookie throw for 250-plus yards in his first NFL start last week, they ranked 23rd against the pass last season and allowed 325.5 passing yards per game in their two playoff matchups last year.

Ryan and his prime targets, Tony Gonzalez and Roddy White, should move the ball better this week. Turner should also improve but the aerial attack will be key.

The pick:

If you go against the seven-point spread favoring Atlanta, you’re admitting that (a) You believe in Derek Anderson and (b) you don’t believe in Matt Ryan. I just don’t see how Anderson will be anything except worse than he was last week and I don’t see how Matt Ryan won’t improve at home against a “D” about half as good as Pittsburgh’s. The Falcons look like a solid pick to me.
