MREAST’S WEEKLY LOOK AT NCAAF TITLE CHASERS (11-03-2008)

MREAST takes a look at the top teams in NCAAF and the week ahead, and predicts the National Title game matchup.

What a game between Texas and Texas Tech. It was a nearly impossible spot for Texas, having played 3 undefeated teams in a row, and heading to Lubbock to meet their 4th. They left with the loss, being the 2nd undeated team to drop from the ranks, as Tulsa went down to Arkansas as well.

That leaves just 7 teams amongst the ranks of the unbeaten, with still 3 Cinderella teams alive in Boise St, Utah, and Ball St. This week I will look at not just unbeaten teams, but teams with 1 loss as well, which in total now number 13. Here is a look at the week ahead.

N. ILLINOIS @ BALL ST. (8-0)

Ball St. got a well needed week of rest, and should be primes on Tuesday Night to continue unbeaten

TCU (9-1) @ UTAH (9-0)

This should be a huge battle of very solid teams, and it looks like I am going to have a big play on this one, so will not divukge too much information here, stay tuned!

PENN ST. (9-0) @ IOWA

Could be a tricky spot for Coach Pa and his Nittany’s, but an extra week to prepare, and the fact that running the table should mean Championship game, will have the Lions ready. If Coach Pa runs the table, could they possibly deny him for the 5th time as an undefeated team, from a National Championship bid?

ALABAMA (9-0) @ LSU

UPSET ALERT!! The Tide will have their hands full down on the bayou this weekend. Although I think the Tide are the better team here, the Tigers will be loaded for Bear.

BAYLOR @ TEXAS (8-1)

Texas had their stranglehold on the Championship game thwarted at Lubbock, but remain in the hunt, but if their ever was a team, that could be a no-show after 4 huge games, it could be the Horns.

OKLAHOMA (8-1) @ TEXAS A&M

If the Sooners don’t win this one, their ought to be an investigation

FLORIDA (7-1) @ VANDERBILT

Gators have to be careful they aren’t too full of themselves after huge revenge game at the cocktail party, or the Dores could open a lethal wound in their Championship quet, but remains unlikely.

UTAH ST @ BOISE ST. (8-0)

If the Broncos fall to the Aggies on the Smurf turf, their ought to be an investigation.

SAN DIEGO ST. @ BYU (8-1)

PLEASE!

CALIFORNIA @ USC (7-1)

USC is rolling now, if a one loss team has a shot, then USC is in the mix, Cal is playing well, but not well enough!

We have 3 unbeatens remaining with Penn St., Texas Tech, and Alabama. Bama and Tech have bigtime games this week and 1 or both could disappear from the ranks of the unbeaten this week, and Penn St. does not have an easy game vs the defensive Hawkeyes. There is a lot of football left, especially when Conference Championship games, may have a tight fielf, jockeying for position, and making a claim.

TEXAS TECH has a tough road as they will face Oklahoma St, then on the road vs the Sooners, and if they survive, likely Missouri in the Big-12 Championship game. If they survive, they are certainly worthy of playing for the Title, and will be hard to keep out if 3 BCS schools remain unblemished.

ALABAMA has a date with their likely destiny in Baton Rouge. A win and they have 2 winnable games left at home vs Miss St, and Auburn, and a likely date with Florida for the SEC Championship, and also a game that could vault the winner to the Championship game

PENN ST. has the easiest road, and if they get by Iowa, which I’m 98% certain they will, they should be playing for the Title.

TEAMS THAT ARE IN THE HUNT BUT NEED HELP:

FLORIDA has a shot if the Tigers can take it to the TIDE this weekend, because they will likely meet head-to-head for the SEC Championship

OKLAHOMA has to beat TX TECH in 2 weeks, and the Big-12 would become a log jam and to messy to sort out all the possibilities now

TEXAS is going to need some help now, but have to get through the mess in the BIG-12 South to have a chance

OKLAHOMA ST needs to beat Tech, and they will be in the mix.

USC needs some things to happen to a few teams but not dead

BCS BUSTERS:

BOISE ST is going to finish unbeaten, and that should be good enough, but will it be?

UTAH has a big date with TCU, and another with BYU, both at home. If the Utes finish unbeaten, they will have to hold their breath, and see what happens, but might be left out.

TCU has to beat Utah, and still is likely to miss out

BALL ST. NO CHANCE!

BYU currently 3rd in their conference, with virtually no chance

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP PREDICTION:

PENN ST. vs ALABAMA

Looks like another interesting week ahead as we head down the stretch. I’ll be back next week, and see if the picture becomes clearer, which will likely not be the case. If the season is giving you headaches, then take a look at my track record, and if I can help, give me a try!

Have a great week! See you next week right here!
