Washington State Cougars vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys Preview

Washington State and Oklahoma State will open the season playing each other on the Cowboys home turf and college football lines have OSU as a 15.5-point favorite. The Cowboys will not have high expectations like they did last season with many players gone, but they will still be a force to deal with in the Big 12.

Washington State will look to forget one of their worst seasons in their history, as last season they only had one win and did not win any Pac 10 games and ranked near the bottom of the pack on offense and defense.

Oklahoma State plays a killer conference schedule so every early season win is key for them in order improve their chances of playing in a good bowl game. In Big 12 play they face 3 teams that are ranked in the pre-season top 10 in Nebraska, Texas, and Oklahoma.

Much like last season the Pac 10 is not one of the premier conferences, but Washington State still faces 3 pre-season top 25 teams in USC, Oregon, and Oregon State.

This game is being held at Boone Pickens Stadium so the Cowboys will have a HUGE home field advantage.

QB Zac Robinson is gone and taking his place under center for the Cowboys is 26-year-old Brandon Weeden, who has a strong arm and was a former pitcher in the New York Yankee farm system. The WR trio of Hubert Anyiam (42 rec 515 yards 3 TD), Josh Cooper (20 rec 232 1 TD) and possible superstar Justin Blackmon (20 rec 260 yards 2 TD) will be Weeden’s main targets and the Cougars’ secondary has to have good coverage since all these guys can take it to the house after the catch.

RB Kendall Hunter was an All American candidate last season, but an injury held him to only 382 yards and 1 TD. He looks to get back to being one of the best RB’s in the Big 12 this season. He will be running against a front line D of WSU that is mediocre at best.

The Washington State defense should be better than last season, but it is still their main weakness. They ranked dead last in the country last season in total defense and allowed more than 38 points a game. This season run stopping and their secondary are major issues for the Cougars.

One of the big question marks for the Cowboys this season is their offensive line that is replacing 4 starters including Russell Okung, who is the best offensive tackle in the 2010 NFL Draft. The new guys coming in have gel right away and protect their new QB and open up holes for the rushing attack.

Last season the Cougars’ offense ranked 119th in the nation nationally in scoring and total offense and they may be better with 2nd year starter Jeff Tuel. Tuel showed signs of being a legit star before tearing up his knee early in the season. WSU returns their top 4 WR’s and the group is led by 2009 All-Pac-10 honorable mention selection Jared Karstetter.

RB Marcus Richmond will be the starter in the backfield unless James Montgomery can go after rehabbing from a nasty knee injury last season that kept him out of spring drills. Last season the Cougars rushing attack averaged a paltry 2.4 yards per carry.

Richmond played on special teams last season and did not take one hand off and Montgomery is coming off a major knee injury, which means they may be in a world of hurt against the Cowboys’ D that is strong against the run.

The Washington State offensive line was horrible last season giving up a ton of sacks and on top of everything they lost four-year starting C Kenny Alfred, who was the anchor of the line. They will have to play great in this game to keep the solid pass rush of the Cowboys from being in the backfield for the whole game.

The Cowboys’ LB corps and secondary is loaded with young and talented players, but they lack a lot of experience.

Washington State was one of the worst teams in college last season and while they do have some talent they simply do not have the players to match up with Oklahoma State. The Cowboys will win this game and it is a little surprising that they are only favored by 15.5 points, which the Cowboys will easily cover at home.

Pick: Oklahoma State -15.5
