Minnesota Vikings vs. New York Jets Preview

When last we left the Vikings, more than a week ago, they had just saved their season with a 2-point victory at home against their perennial punching bags, the Lions.

Now the Vikes embark on the NFL’s version of the Bataan Death March, starting with Monday night’s game against the frisky Jets in New Jersey, continuing with battles against the Cowboys and Packers, and finishing up on Halloween night at New England.

Every opponent in this season-defining stretch has Super Bowl aspirations, and even if the Vikings manage a 2-2 split, they will head into November at 3-4 and quite possibly solidly in third place in the NFC North.

Then there’s the Brett Favre issue. Favre has been knocked around some (6 sacks in 3 games), and the 14 days off between games was more than welcomed.

The big question now is how Favre’s body will respond to games against three of the best defensive teams in the league – the Jets live to put QBs on their butts, Dallas LB DeMarcus Ware is the best in the league when he’s on the attack, and in case you missed it Green Bay’s Clay Matthews spends most of his waking moments chasing quarterbacks out of the pocket. The Jets, meanwhile, are fat and happy. That opening-day loss to Baltimore is long since forgotten, New York having since that day run the table in the AFC East with victories over New England, Miami and Buffalo.

The bye week was spent to good use, and now some of their injured players – most notably CB Darrelle Revis – are back in the fold.

Perhaps most importantly, the three division wins have put to rest the concern that Mark Sanchez is not yet ready for the NFL. The kid seemed to learn from his anemic effort against the Ravens and has led the team to 97 points since imploding against Baltimore. The Jets’ offensive line, fat with high draft choices, is among the best in the league and LaDainian Tomlinson is showing that maybe there is some gas left in the can.

All that, and receiver Santonio Holmes is now good to go after a 4-game suspension.

Picks: Jets -4 and Over (37.5)

I know these two teams can both play defense, but there are just too many good offensive players on the field to contain the number under 38. It’s clear that Favre will never be satisfied managing a game and just handing off to Adrian Peterson, and he’ll want to put a show for his former team.

That will probably lead to a couple of picks. Jets will cover 4 in a moderately high-scoring game.

Prediction Two: If the Vikings are not at least 4-4 by midnight on Oct. 31, Favre will cite and injury and retire.
