Houston Texans vs. New York Jets Preview

If you place any credence at all in trap games, this one moves to the front of the line. The Jets have two winnable home games on the docket – this one against the Texans and next week against a falling-apart-at-the-seams Bengals – before trudging up Route 95 for their biggest game of the season, in Foxboro on Dec. 6.

Jets fans are hoping that the near-death experience last week in Cleveland is enough to keep the boys focused enough to avoid a letdown before the Patriots showdown. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

The Jets have been walking along the edge of a cliff for the past month. They beat Denver with a strong fourth period after being outplayed for 45 minutes, they were shut out at home by the Packers, and they survived overtime games against the Lions and Browns. They are navigating through the soft underbelly of an already-benign schedule, and aren’t dominating.

Still, as in golf, at the end of the day they ask how many, not how, and the NYJ are 7-2 and tied with New England atop the AFC East.

Houston, meanwhile, has to figure out a way to rebound from that devastating Hail Mary loss to Jacksonville, and Gary Kubiak knows that without 5 wins in the last 7 games, he’ll be in the employment line before Feb. 1. It won’t be easy – besides the Jets, there are road games at Tennessee, Philadelphia (gulp) and Denver.

The Texans are 4-5 and one more loss basically renders them irrelevant in the AFC South, ending a season that began on a high with that victory over Indianapolis.

The picks: Jets give 7 in this one, which is a strong number for a team that is winning ugly week after week.

Still, New York is 6-3 ATS. Jets backers last week got a bonus when they scored a TD in overtime. Just about every overtime game ends in a field goal, and NY was favored by 3.5 at Cleveland (conversely, Browns bettors took a real bad beat). Lots of scoring in the last few weeks league-wide has pushed the O/U numbers higher than they should be.

Looking for NY to grind out another close win, playing the under a bit heavier than the Jets side.
