New England Patriots vs. Pittsburgh Steelers preview

Last weekend’s bitchslap in Cleveland pointed one thing about the New England Patriots – on any given game day any one of several teams could show up to play.

The Pats are good enough to beat good teams (Baltimore) and bad enough to lose to bad teams (Cleveland). Somehow they are tied for the best record in the NFL, but even fans and media in New England look at the Pats and can’t quite fathom how they have won six of eight games so far this season.

Not even Tom Brady is a sure thing anymore. Brady was outplayed by rookie Colt McCoy in Cleveland last weekend, and while it may have been the highlight of McCoy’s pro life, it’s the guy with the long hair who is now reevaluating things heading into this Sunday night’s battle in Pittsburgh. The Patriots’ running game is average at best, the pass rush is non-existent and NE uses a variation of the prevent defense for the entire game, forcing teams to go on long, clock-killing drives. Bill Belichick seems to be telling his team to keep it close and he’ll think of something in the fourth quarter.

While the Patriots seem to be searching for an identity in the post-Moss Era, the 6-2 Steelers will greet NE Sunday with same-old, same-old. Pound the ball and soften up the defense to create seams for the receivers, and on defense pressure the quarterback and offensive line until it starts to crack.

As the Monday Night Football TV crew put it, the Steelers don’t game plan too much – they just work to perfect what they already do well.

Trends:

Over is 8-2 in NE last 10 games overall.
Over is 7-2 in NE last 9 vs. AFC.
Over is 5-2-1 in NE last 8 games in November.
PIT are 2-5-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
PIT are 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 games on grass.
Over is 7-3-1 in PIT last 11 vs. AFC.

The picks: Tough call on this one because historically the Patriots have played well against the Steelers (look it up – even the Pete Carroll Pats outplayed the Bill Cowher Steelers before Brady arrived in Foxboro).

But the Steelers just have too many good players on both sides of the ball for NE to contend with. Belichick is able to take away what a team does best, but a well-balanced club gives the Pats trouble.

Liking the Steelers to cover this one, with a solid play on the under as the Pats try to turn this one in a taffy pull they can steal late.
