New York Giants (1-0)

It was a tale of two halves for the New York Giants as they christened their new stadium in Week 1. The first half started shakily against Carolina, as Eli Manning threw two interceptions and the Giants trailed 16-14 after two quarters.

But both of Manning’s picks – and his third one in the second half – came on tipped balls. He and the Giants didn’t get down and they rallied hard to defeat the Panthers 31-18.

In the end, the Giants drew several major positives from the victory. Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs combined for 120 rushing yards; rangy Hakeem Nicks caught three touchdown passes from Eli. Nicks looks like the next Plaxico Burress.

The Giants’ “D,” labelled washed up by many pundits last year, looked rejuvenated last week. It bottled up DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart on the ground and bludgeoned quarterback Matt Moore until he left the game with a 42.5 per cent completion rate, three interceptions and a concussion.

After a smashing debut, can the Giants keep up the good work on the road in Manning Bowl 2.0?

Indianapolis Colts (0-1)

Week 1 went much differently for Eli’s older brother Peyton and the Indianapolis Colts. Peyton himself was just fine, completing 40 passes for 433 yards and three scores, but those bloated numbers are telling. Peyton threw so much because his team trailed the whole game. Indy passed the ball well but didn’t do much else right. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

What happened to the Colts? Arian Foster happened. The newly anointed Texans starter ripped off 231 rushing yards against Indy last week. The Texans didn’t even need to use their usual big guns, Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson, to beat the Colts. For years, Indy has drawn criticism for struggling to stop the run and, if last week is any indication, the problem isn’t going away. It also doesn’t help that safety Bob Sanders, one of the Colts’ only solid run-stoppers, tore his bicep last week.

The pick:

Admittedly, the matchup doesn’t look great for the Colts right now. The Panthers arguably have the NFC’s best running game and the Giants made it look ordinary last week. That means Joseph Addai and the Colts probably won’t do much on the ground. Peyton always gets the job done through the air but the Giants could key on him.

Against Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs, the Colts have to be better stopping the run if they want to win this game. Though Bradshaw got the lion’s share of the carries last week, the gigantic Jacobs could really give Indy trouble this Sunday night.

Despite those factors, I’m still leaning Indianapolis’ way this week. The Colts will view their home opener as a must-win. They’re a wounded animal. They still have a good pass rush and some ball hawks in their secondary, so they should force a few mistakes out of Eli Manning. It also doesn’t help for New York that Nicks is battling an ankle injury and may not play.

And even though the Giants shut down Matt Moore last week, it was Matt Moore. Let’s see how improved they really are against Peyton Manning on the road. I’d expect a close game and some big offense from the Giants’ running game and Indy’s passing game. In the end, I think the Colts’ pass “D” will come up with a big play on Eli and help the Colts hold off the Giants for a win.
