So, which will it be: the Netherlands or Spain? World Cup 2010 betting markets are open to trading, soccer lines and odds are taking shape and moving according to betting trends as fans start to weigh in by placing their wagers, all the while knowing that the all-important answer to the question, posed at the start of the proceedings: which team will win the World Cup, is almost upon us.

The early line in the BetUS sportsbook has Spain, the pre-tournament favourite, going into the Final with the same sentiment:

Spain starts off at +110 to win outright in regulation time. The regulation Draw option is the second choice, at +220 odds, while Netherlands are a close third, at +260.

Since the start of the tournament, the idea a new champion would be crowned in South Africa held appeal. Some even flirted with the notion an African nation would finally come through, seeing as the event was held on African soil. Alas, the storybook ending for Africa was not to be. It is to be a European nation in the end that will hoist the 19th World Cup title.

We have seen 18 instalments of the FIFA 2010 World Cup since its inception in 1930 and the titles are split between two continents alone – Europe and South America. Interestingly, the titles are split evenly between the continents (and only seven countries altogether have claimed the title).

Certainly, Europe is going to edge South America after Sunday as both finalists are representatives of the European continent. What is more, it will be a first in each case.

The Netherlands and Spain will have a chance to write a dream ending to their campaigns on Sunday July 11th, 2010 when they vie for the biggest prize in football in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Netherlands move into the Final on the back of some impressive form and they topped some serious opposition to reach the final, namely beating Brazil in the quarterfinals. That victory over five-time World Cup champions, Brazil really underscores their progress through the tournament and sets them up rather well for the final.

Nonetheless, they are held as the underdogs to win outright, currently trading at +260 to win outright and at + ½ (-130) on the Handicap.

Netherlands are arguably one of the best football nations to have never won a World Cup Final. They have been to two finals (1974 and 1978) but had their bid thwarted each time. This is Netherlands’ third World Cup Final appearance. Will they strike out yet again or will it prove third-time-lucky?

Spain, as mentioned, came good on expectations by reaching the Final. To claim they did it in their scintillating style and that they were impressive would be an overstatement. Still they are in the Final and perhaps that is all that matters.

Spain confirmed their place in the final when they edged out a frightfully on form Germany 1-0 on Wednesday.

This is Spain’s first World Cup Final. They are listed as the firm favourites to win outright, albeit they are on the large side of evens – tipped at +110. On the Handicap they are listed at -1/2 (+110).

Seeing that Spain haven’t yet disappointed and they are only a victory away from proving pundits right all along, they appear to be a good bet all round.

In the end, no matter which way you slice this match there is plenty of value to be had on both sides. While the winner is yet uncertain, what is certain is that this will be a great final, a titanic final between two nations that have long waited for this moment. And soccer betting fans around the world will be there with them, watching the dream unfold. May the best nation win! Vive le Football!
