The No. 25 Oregon State Beavers will need to put its past behind them while focusing on the present and not looking forward to its upcoming meeting with another top 10 opponent.

That’s an arduous task considering the Beavers have had a lot of time to reflect on what went wrong in their season opening loss to then–No. 6 Texas Christian.

Trailing just 28-21 in the fourth, the Beavers hung tough with the Horned Frogs until an over snapped ball resulted in a safety, killing a potential game-winning drive with just over four minutes left to play, putting the game just out of reach.

Despite the loss, sophomore QB Ryan Katz, making his first start for OSU, threw for 159 yards and two TDs, but struggled with consistency, completing just 9-of-25. He will need to quickly improve those numbers if he is to lead the Beavers through a daunting schedule that has them facing two top 25 opponents in their next four outings, including a Week 4 showdown with No. 3 Boise State.

As for now, OSU’s focus will be on winning its ninth straight home opener at Reser Stadium against a school they have met just one time previously, with then-No.11 Louisville steamrolling to a 63-27 home victory back in 2005.

After losing their home opener against Kentucky, the Cardinals sloppy offense managed to roll up 388 yards in a 23-13 win over Eastern Kentucky, while at the same time failed to convert 80 percent of its third downs, committing 11 penalties for 100 yards. Those types of lapses will likely prove irrecoverable against a much more talented OSU squad this weekend.

The most productive part of the Cardinals’ offense has been the ground attack, which has produced 359 yards in two games behind a solid effort from running back Bilal Powell. The senior rushed for 153 yards against Kentucky and 92 with two touchdowns last week, but will now face an OSU squad that will be determined to bolster a rushing defense that surrendered 275 yards on the ground to one of the nations’ top running attacks.

The Beavers did however pick off a pair of Andy Dalton passes, even though a tired and beaten down defense spent nearly 40 minutes on the field, far too long.

OSU must change that, and one way to do it will be to get star running back Jacquizz Rodgers back on the rails, assuming command of the clock while keeping the Louisville offense off the field and allowing the Beavers’ defense time to rest and regroup.

Rodgers, who averaged nearly 111 rushing yards last season, should have no problem exploiting a Cardinals’  defense that has allowed 696 yards through two games, giving up 230 on the ground to Kentucky in its season-opening loss.

Despite Katz’s inexperience, the Beavers are a talented team and at its best when No. 1 is cruising. A big day against Louisville would provide a boost with a marquee visit to Boise State ahead.
