LAST GAME: Marshall Won 21-17 vs Ohio

Marshall

Doc Holliday is the new coach at Marshall, and the Thundering Herd are looking to improve upon their mediocre results from the last few seasons.

The Thundering Herd have seven starters returning on offense and six on defense. The fans expect this team to step up a bit this year, but with a game at Ohio State and against West Virginia to start the year, they’ll have a very tough schedule to begin 2010.

Antonio Harvey headlines a defense that is impressive against the run. Harvey is a senior linebacker who is a huge hitter. The defensive line is strong against the run as well, with two big run stuffers in the middle. The problem with the defensive line is they have had trouble getting pressure on the quarterback. In a game against a player like Terrelle Pryor, not getting heat on the quarterback could be a huge problem.

The offense of Marshall has a nice running back in Martin Ward. Ward is a shifty back and his backups are very capable as well.

The wide receivers are an area of strength, and Lee Smith is a tight end that really helps this team move the chains. The offensive line will be solid in both run and pass blocking, as they are full of veterans who know their roles. The biggest question mark comes at the quarterback spot where Brian Anderson has been quite inconsistent.

Anderson threw 14 touchdowns last year, but he also threw 13 interceptions. He needs to improve his decision making this year. College Football

Ohio State

The Buckeyes finished off last year with a huge win in the Rose Bowl over Oregon. Jim Tressel’s team comes into this year as the #2 ranked team in the country. Some believe this could be Tressel’s most talented team at Ohio State. No doubt about it, the success or failure of this team rides largely on the shoulders of quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

Terrelle Pryor is an absolute freak of an athlete under center, and quite frankly he is always the best runner on the field. Pryor is terrific at making something happen or scrambling for a first down when it appears there is nothing available. The area where he has struggled some has been the passing game. Pryor has a strong arm, but his accuracy isn’t always there, and he sometimes locks in on a receiver.

He must mature as a quarterback for this team to reach their goal of a National Championship.

The Buckeyes have five running backs that could see plenty of playing time, and all of them are high quality runners. The wide receivers aren’t as deep as some years, but Devier Posey has the potential to have a breakout year. The offensive line has struggled in recent years, but they appeared to start putting it together at the end of last year.

The talent is there for this team to run the ball well on a consistent basis.

The Buckeyes defense lost some on the defensive line, but Cameron Heyward is one of the best in the nation at the defensive end spot. The linebackers are terrific and extremely deep. In the secondary the Buckeyes will have quite a bit of veteran leadership.

The defense may not be the best Tressel has ever had, but they should be very good.

Marshall vs. Ohio St. College Football Gambling Trends

Marshall is 3-17 SU in its last 20 games on the road
Ohio State is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
Ohio State is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games at home
The total has gone UNDER in 8 of Ohio State’s last 12 games
The total has gone UNDER in 9 of Marshall’s last 11 games
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Marshall’s last 5 games on the road

The Pick:

Last time these two met in 2004 the Buckeyes won on a last second field goal. Don’t count on this game going down to the wire. The Buckeyes are way too deep for the Thundering Herd and I fully expect Marshall to have serious trouble putting up points. I like the under in this one as Tressel’s teams usually let off the gas earlier than most.

Marshall at Ohio State Prediction: Ohio State 34 Marshall 7
