NCCAF: SPURRIER LOOKING FOR REVENGE

It was two years ago in this same spot that South Carolina (7-3, 5-3-1 ATS) almost derailed Florida’s national championship dreams, losing 17-16 as 13-point road underdogs.

That’s not carrying much weight this week as South Carolina is a 22 ½-point underdog this Saturday in Gainesville.

Though Steve Spurrier has far too many fond memories of his alma mater, the place that made him a coaching legend, his intense competitive nature will only allow him to feel so much love before scheming to beat the Gators.

Blog talkers wonder if Spurrier has lost the magic. If the ol’ ball coach has lost anything it’s the ability to have top notch recruits want to play at Columbia, which is not his fault per se.

Trying to compete with the tradition-rich schools in the SEC, is a daunting task. The game plans are as creative as ever and are still expertly pieced together, the only real problem, and it’s a big one, having the right players to execute them.

Defensively, it’s not a bad thing being the other USC defensively, ranking third in the country in 2008. The Gamecocks are 8-2-1 as road underdogs under Spurrier.

Spurrier probably would never admit it, however he has to see a little of himself in Urban Meyer. NFL Pick Of The Week: SC vs. FLAMeyer is quieter, yet no less in your face. For those who missed it, Meyer had the answer for Georgia’s celebration last season, calling two timeouts in the final 44 seconds, leading 49-10 against the Bulldogs and at the conclusion of the game had his team sing the Florida fight song in the Georgia end zone.

The Gators (8-1, 7-2 ATS) are the SEC East champs, having two non-conference tilts left before heading to Atlanta. Tim Tebow probably won’t win another Heisman, nevertheless his skill as a field general has increased significantly, with a much better team around him.

The Florida offense is so efficient and so effective, that even if the Gamecocks can shut down one aspect, and slow down another, someone else will step up. Florida is 10-2 ATS when playing against a team with a winning record over the last two seasons.

Florida owns a 15-1 record over the Gamecocks, though is 7-9 against the spread, often having to cover huge numbers when Spurrier was tossing the Gators visor around.

Coach Meyer has yet to see a score he couldn’t run up and his squad is 10-2 ATS in home games after scoring 31 points or more in five straight games. South Carolina has to play mistake-free football and force Florida turnovers to improve to 12-4 ATS on the road.
