The 3-8 Dallas Cowboys travel to Lucas Oil Stadium this Sunday afternoon to take on the Indianapolis Colts, who are currently tied with Jacksonville for first place in the AFC South. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. and the game will be broadcast regionally on FOX.
Dallas’s interim head coach Jason Garrett saw his two game winning streak come to an end in a 30-27 Thanksgiving Day loss to New Orleans as once again mistakes, penalties, and turnovers cost the Cowboys the game. The big play in this one was a Roy Williams’ fumble deep in Saints territory that prevented them from putting the game away for good.
The loss, as a rare four-point home underdog on Thanksgiving, dropped Dallas to 3-8 straight-up, but raised its record to 4-7 against the spread. It also effectively ended any chance for a miracle second rally to make the playoffs after a disastrous 1-7 start.
The Cowboys’ motivation for this game should still run high as everyone from Garrett down to the ball boy are playing for their job in the eyes of team owner Jerry Jones. This game will be a true test of how far pride can carry this team in the often-troubling month of December in a season that was already lost back in September and October.
Indianapolis has its own set of problems as this team is very close to imploding after losing three of its last four games. The latest setback was a 36-14 loss to San Diego as a three-point home favorite. Injuries to key personnel on both sided of the ball have taken their toll as the Colts find themselves at 6-5 SU on the year and 6-4-1 ATS. The only good news in this whole scenario is they are still tied for first place in the division.
QB Peyton Manning is coming off one of the worst games in his career after throwing four interceptions with two being returned for scores. His passer rating over the past four games is 73.22 and he has thrown just seven touchdowns verse nine interceptions.
The Colts have absolutely no running game to fall back upon as they are currently ranked 29th in the league in average rushing yards per game.
Dallas is 1-4 ATS in its last five games following a SU loss and 3-11 ATS in its last 14 games in December. The total has gone ‘over’ in their last eight games overall.
Indianapolis is 4-0 ATS in its last four games following an ATS loss and 5-1 ATS in its last six games in December. The total has stayed ‘under’ in three of the Colts last four home games.
What appeared to be a marquee matchup on paper before the season started has become a battle of pride for the Cowboys verse a battle of survival for the Colts. This could be a wait and see game as Indianapolis is hoping to get a few key players back for Sunday including WR Austin Collie and RB Joseph Addai to help with Manning’s current one-man show.
If this is the case, take the Colts to get back on track with a win.
