Colorado

It’s been another sub-.500 season for the Buffaloes; this once-proud football program is lately an afterthought in the Big 12 North division. The Buffs are only 2-5 in conference play and the QB tandem of Tyler Hansen and Cody Hawkins (the coach’s son) has been largely uninspired. Little squirt tailback Rodney Stewart has had a dynamic season (1,230 yards, 10 TDs) but it hasn’t translated in the win column for CU.

Colorado has turned it around with back-to-back wins, but the program endured an awful five-game losing streak in October that pretty much tanked their season. Nebraska is an historic rival to the Buffs, however, so they should be fired up to end the season on a high note. For that to happen, Stewart must find seams in the Huskers’ Top 10 defensive unit. The Colorado defense must find some way of slowing down Nebraska’s lethal rushing attack, fuelled by RB Roy Helu, RB Rex Burkhead and super frosh QB Taylor Martinez.

It won’t be easy for a program that has struggled to find its identity in recent seasons. There is decent talent in Boulder, but seemingly nothing is done with it. With a seventh loss on the season – even to a powerful rival on the road – Hawkins’s hot seat may finally turn from a simmer to a boil.

Nebraska

The doom and gloom around Colorado’s program has been the entire opposite in Lincoln. The once-proud football program is back up at the top of the mountain enjoying the thin air. Head coach Bo Pelini (despite being derided by Nebraska’s AD last week for childish behaviour) has re-built the school’s image on hard-nosed running and hard-nosed defense; precisely what the Blackshirts were built on for decades.

The attack centers around the aforementioned running trio. If it weren’t for stud Michigan underclassmen Denard Robinson, Nebraska’s QB Martinez would be all the rage. He’ll finish the season with 1,500+ yards passing and over 1,000 yards rushing – a remarkable achievement for any dual-threat pivot, no less a freshman.

Yet there have been worrisome spots. The Huskers dropped their second game of the season last week, when they could only manage six points versus Texas A&M in a gutty 9-6 loss in College Station. The Huskers’ “D” was pesky as usual, but A&M held Martinez to just 124 total yards. Worse still, he sustained an injury in the game and won’t start against rival Colorado. Highly-touted backup Cody Green will get the nod for Nebraska, but if 1,000-yard back Helu and champion second-fiddler Burkhead take control, Green should handle the duty.

Nebraska needs Martinez healthy for a potential Big 12 championship game, but first they need to dispatch piddling Colorado. With a run game and a ravenous defense led by DL Jared Crick and DB Prince Amukamara, there should be enough firepower to push the ledger to double-digit wins.

The Pick:

Colorado’s Stewart might find some running lanes, but even with minimal (if any) time on the field for Martinez, Nebraska’s offense should atone for its slumping performance last week. If the offense has a resurgence and the defense plays its normal suffocating style, Colorado won’t have a chance and Nebraska should cover the spread.

Colorado vs. Nebraska Score Prediction: Colorado 13 Nebraska 35

Who ever wrote this article should be fired for not knowing what the hell he is talking about. A loss to Nebraska will not cost Dan Hawkins his job because he was fired almost a month ago. The buffs have won 2 games since he has been fired moron. Keep up the good work
