NFL Thursday Night Football – Chicago Bears vs. San Francisco 49ers

The Chicago Bears are suffering from a split personality. They got off to a solid start this season, winning three of their first four games with new quarterback Jay Cutler leading the way.

Heading into their Week 10 showdown against the San Francisco 49ers, the Bears have dropped three of four and are fresh off getting spanked by the Arizona Cardinals 41-21 in Week 9.

This Thursday night they’ll be playing a Niners team that is in the same boat as them. After getting off to a strong 3-1 start, just like Chicago, San Francisco has lost four consecutive games coming into this contest, including Sunday’s 34-27 home loss to a Tennessee squad that had won just one game this season prior to Sunday.

Both teams will be in all-out desperation to win in Week 10, which means a hard hitting, spirited affair.

Chicago Bears (4-4 SU, 4-4 ATS, 4-4 O/U)

Trends

The Bears are 1-3 ATS away.
The Bears are 4-1 ATS in last 5 against 49ers

What the Bears Need To Do To Win
Chicago is ranked a mediocre 19th in total offense, averaging 332.4 yards per game and is having big trouble running the ball this season, averaging just 90.4 rushing yards per game (28th). Defensively, Chicago is also ranked in the bottom third in rushing yards allowed (119.5, 21st) and points allowed (23.9 ppg, 22nd).

If the Bears want to beat Frisco in this contest, they are going to have to run the ball more effectively and be able to stop Niners elusive running back Frank Gore who has rushed for 447 yards on 80 carries for a fantastic 5.6 yards per attempt average.

San Francisco 49ers (3-5 SU, 5-2-1 ATS, 44 O/U)

Trends

The 49ers are 2-2 ATS at home.
The 49ers are 5-0 ATS as an underdog.
The 49ers are 1-0 ATS as a home underdog.

What the 49ers Need To Do To Win
The Niners are ranked in the bottom third in almost every important offensive category, including passing (22nd) and rushing (21st, 101.4 ypg) while ranking just 19th in scoring (21.8 ppg). San Francisco has been excellent against the run, ranking fifth in the league, by allowing 93.2 yards per contest but have been absolutely toasted against the pass this season, allowing a whopping 241 passing yards per contest (24th).

If the Niners are to have any hopes of winning this game, they are going to have to stop strong-armed Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, who has thrown multiple TD passes in five games this season, from airing it out.

NFL Odds

Chicago Bears +3 -105
San Francisco 49ers -3 -115
Over/Under 43½

Analysis: I like the 49ers to win and cover the spread in this home contest as Bears’ quarterback Jay Cutler simply doesn’t have the offensive weapons he needs to succeed in Chicago this season. With return-man, turned-wideout, Devin Hester, as the team’s best offensive option outside of running back Matt Forte, whom I expect the Niners to shut down, Chicago looks like it will have a tough time getting into the end zone. With no-nonsense head coach Mike Singletary breathing down his players necks during this loosing streak, you know the 49ers are going to come out banging.

Chicago has allowed over 40 points in two of their last three games but don’t expect the Niners to have some kind of offensive explosion against Chicago as Singletary generally likes to play ‘old school’ power football, I say the Niners win this one in a low-scoring affair.
