Carolina is coming off a bye week after loosing to the Cowboys in Dallas 21-7 on MNF. Despite the score being a little lopsided, the Panthers actually looked pretty good and actually led going into the second half.

If anything, that should have given them something to build on in their off week as they got a full week + to prepare for the Redskins, who are winless on the road. These two teams met last season and Carolina destroyed the Redskins 47-3. I’d say that you should read to much into that score in terms of how this game is going to play out but with an off week and some positive things to build on, Carolina may be in line for their first win on Sunday.

With the Panthers currently listed as -3.5 point home favorites and the over/under set at 37.5 points, its time to make our NFL betting prediction.

Here are some trends that will help us make the right pick:

Redskins

Redskins are 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 games in October.
Redskins are 6-17-4 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.
Redskins are 1-3-2 ATS in their last 6 games as an underdog.
Redskins are 1-5-2 ATS in their last 8 games following a ATS loss.

Panthers

Panthers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games in Week 5.
Panthers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games when playing on Sunday following a Monday night game.
Panthers are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games after scoring less than 15 points in their previous game.
Panthers are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games as a favorite.
Panthers are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games following a S.U. loss.

Over/Under

Under is 4-0-1 in Redskins last 5 games after allowing less than 250 total yards in their previous game.
Under is 4-0-1 in Redskins last 5 games in October.
Under is 8-1-1 in Redskins last 10 games following a ATS loss.
Under is 4-0 in Panthers last 4 games following a bye week.
Under is 6-1 in Panthers last 7 games in October.
Under is 5-1-1 in Panthers last 7 games in Week 5.

The Redskins are actually playing reasonably well despite constantly being bombarded by the media. They sit at 2-2 after a narrow victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but that still puts them dead last in the NFC East.

It’s hard to put a finger on what their problem has been. I personally feel that they haven’t been trying to get the ball down the field enough. Last week, it was a long ball to Santana Moss that won them the game and I feel that they need to take more shots down the field, but I’m not sure if Campbell is an accurate enough passer to consistently hit that route.

The Panthers and QB Jake Delhomme look like they’re on the verge of breaking out and winning some games. In Week 3 versus the Cowboys he threw for 22 of 33 passes for 220 yards with a TD pass and two interceptions. Both interceptions weren’t really his fault as receivers quit on the routes both times. But far this season it’s been a lot of the same for Delhomme as he has only thrown for 601 yards with two TD passes and SEVEN interceptions. That’s stat that everyone is worried about in Carolina, he needs to start taking care of the ball to give his team a chance because in this league, turnovers cost you games.

Were really looking at the trends for this pick, and also going a little on gut feeling as the Panthers have had a long time to prepare for this one and should be hungry for their first win, especially at home. That’s who I’m going with in my NFL Week 5 Betting Prediction.

The Pick: Carolina (-3 ½) and Parlay that with the UNDER
