AFC East Week 2 Showdown – New England Patriots vs. NY Jets

New England Patriots (-3½) vs. New York Jets (+3½)
O/U (45½)
Sunday, September 20 – 1:00 PM ET

I haven’t been this excited about a New England Patriots (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS, 1-0 O/U) versus New York Jets (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, 0-1 O/U) matchup in quite some time – and all eyes will be on this contest following some bold words from Jets’ first-year head coach Rex Ryan – and a brief reply from Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

“I never came here to kiss Bill Belichick’s rings,” Ryan said in an interview on WFAN this past offseason. “I came here to win, let’s put it that way…. I’m certainly not intimidated by New England or anybody else.”

“I’m not going to concede anything,” Ryan added. “Do I recognize the fact that Belichick is a heck of a coach? Absolutely. My thing is, I’m not intimidated by him or anyone else in this business. Period. I don’t care who it is. Our football team certainly isn’t going to be intimidated either. If there are some issues with that, so be it.”

Brady responded this week, simply saying that “talk is cheap.”

Well, the division rivals will renew their hostilities on Sunday when they meet at Giants Stadium at 1 PM ET.

The Patriots recorded a narrow 25-24 win over the Buffalo Bills in Week 1 on Sunday, but would have likely lost if not for a late fumble that led to Tom Brady’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Benjamin Watson with just 50 seconds remaining on the clock in regulation.

The Patriots failed to cover the spread as 10-point home favorites while the game’s final score played OVER the 46.5-point Over/Under total.

Brady completed 39 of 53 passes with two TD strikes and one interception while Randy Moss and Wes Welker each caught 12 passes and veteran running back Fred Taylor rushed for one touchdown.

The Jets jumped all over the Houston Texans in their 24-7 road win in Week 1, easily covering the spread as a 4.5-point underdog while the game’s combined score played Under the 45-point O/U total.

Rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez completed 18 of 31 passes for 272 yards with one touchdown and one interception while veteran running back Thomas Jones rushed for 107 yards on 20 carries with a pair of touchdowns.

NFL Odds

New England Patriots -3½ -110
New York Jets +3½ -110
Over 45½ -110
Under 45½ -110

Analysis: I’m going on record right now to say that this clearly isn’t the same old Jets of the past – and the Patriots don’t look like they are firing on all cylinders as Brady tries to regain his All-Pro form following a devastating knee injury that caused him to miss all of last season.

I also think many of the trends for this contest can be thrown out the window as New York is under a new, clearly tougher regime under Ryan than they ever were under Eric Mangini.

Patriots backers can point to the fact that they have gone a jaw-dropping 10-1 ATS in their last 11 meetings in New York and a blistering 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 meetings, but let it be known that the Jets have gone 4-0 ATS in their last four games as an underdog and 6-1 ATS in their last seven games as an underdog of 3.5-10 points.

While the favorite has recorded a solid 8-3-1 ATS mark in their last 12 meetings and 21-7-1 ATS record in the last 29 meetings between these teams, New York has gone 4-1 ATS in their last five games following an ATS win.

With the new, confidence-laden Jets coming into this home matchup with a very sizable chip on their collective shoulders – and a defense that has quickly jelled under Ryan – I like the New York Jets to cover the spread with the outright win at home.

The fact of the matter is that the Patriots have been in need of some humble pie being shoved down their play-stealing, cheating throats for a long time – and the Jets play Chef Boyardee in this one and serve the Pats a steaming hot plate of it while the final score plays Under the set O/U total in this contest.

One reply on “Pats vs. Jets Trends + Week 2 Pick”

There has been a lot of talk coming out of the Jets locker room, but I’m not sure they will be able to back up any of it. The Partiots will be looking to make a statement in this game.
