Free Picks: UFC 177 Dillashaw vs. Barao II Betting Odds & Preview

UFC 177: Betting Odds & Predictions

UFC 177 comes our way from Sacramento this weekend and features a rematch between TJ Dillashaw and Renan Barao – maybe the only two fighters you’ve ever heard of. Truth be told the card seriously lacks star power and looks, on paper more like a UFC Fight Night card. Cappers Picks provides free UFC handicapping tips for every event on the UFC fight calender. Our man Dave B has your back.

Main Card (10 PM ET, PPV)

UFC 177 Lines

T.J. Dillashaw (10-2-0): -140
Renan Barao (32-2-0): +120

TJ Dillashaw will try to build on what many experts feel is one of the best single performances in years when he takes on Renan Barao in a rematch of the Bantamweight Title match at UFC 173 three months ago. In the last fight Dillashaw battered and utterly dominated Barao who hadn’t been beaten in nine years prior to that fight.

Not to say that Barao is a lesser fighter than Dillashaw but he was outworked and outclassed on that day and lost in every aspect – shocking domination indeed. Maybe Barao underestimated Dillashaw – something that won’t happen again!

Barao was taken completely out of his game in the first fight – Renan failed to utilize his patented leg kicks and vicious Muay Thai that saw him become virtually untouchable during a 20 fight win streak. All Barao was lacking was a little motivation – he will have that in spades Saturday.

While I love what Dillashaw brings to the Octagon – his speed, his insane boxing and his surprisingly good takedown defense, this matchup seems destined for a trilogy. When is the last time Barao was an underdog? Take him to exact some revenge Saturday.

UFC 177 Pick: Renan Barao +120

UFC 177 Lines

Tony Ferguson (15-3-0): -235
Danny Castillo (17-6-0): +200

It’s hard to believe that this is the second-last match on the card as “C+ fighters” Tony Ferguson and Danny Castillo do battle in Lightweight action. Truth be told – each fighter will likely have to win another fight or two just to get into title contention. That said this match could be very good – both fighters are aggressive and both will be looking to make the most of an opportunity to co-headline a UFC event.

Ferguson has a knack of being aggressive anywhere a fight happens to go – his wrestling is good as is his striking. Castillo also possesses a decent set of all around skills and like Ferguson is good, not great in almost every aspect of MMA.

Castillo has struggled in the past against fighters that press the issue – that is exactly what Ferguson will try to do. Castillo’s only real chance is to take this fight to the mat – but Ferguson is the better wrestler (he hasn’t been taken down in six fights). Ferguson should be able to penetrate Castillo’s take down defense and gain top control. He is also a better striker who has a five inch reach advantage and should get the better of the stand-up.

It all adds up to a decision victory for Ferguson here as Castillo fails to score the points necessary to get by the aggressiveness of his opponent. In a bad matchup for the underdog, take the favorite to emerge.

UFC 177 Pick: Tony Ferguson -235

UFC 177 Lines

Bethe Correia (8-0-0): -136
Shayna Baszler (15-6-0): +116

A Women’s Bantamweight scrap may be the best fight on the card. Bethe Correia off an impressive win over Jessamyn Duke at UFC 172. Next up is Duke’ teammate Shayna Baszler who has taken on and beaten some tough women in her day.

Baszler will have the size advantage, the edge in experience and she will also have the motivation of shutting the mouth of Bethe Correia who called out every member of her team after the win against Duke.

I will be a war for sure but I like the motivated underdog to get it done.

UFC 177 Pick: Shayna Baszler +116

UFC 177 Lines

Carlos Diego Ferreira (10-0-0): -205
Ramsey Nijem (9-4-0): +175

Runner up from The Ultimate Fighter Season 13 Ramsey Nijem steps in looking to cure his somewhat inconsistent ways Saturday against jiu-jitsu standout the undefeated Carlos Diego Ferreira. Nijem, a strong wrestler will have some work to do in order to neutralize the ground attack of his Saturday foe – I can’t see him getting it done.

The fighters look equal on paper on the feet but Ferreira definitely has the edge on the ground. When Nijem is dragged into hot water, he tends to revert to some poor techniques and I expect that to happen again Saturday. Ferreira is no joke – watch him dominate in every aspect of the fight en route to a unanimous decision victory.

UFC 177 Pick: Carlos Diego Ferreira -205

UFC 177 Lines

Damon Jackson (9-0-0): +100
Yancy Medeiros (9-2-0) -120

Damon Jackson steps in as a late injury replacement for Justin Edwards in this Lightweight clash. Jackson brings with him a smothering ground game – he used his mat magic to earn the Legacy Featherweight Championship. Yancy Medeiros comes from the Gracie jiu-jitsu camp but also possesses an aggressive striking ability.

Medeiros is simply the more well-rounded fighter in this one. On the ground, this fight looks like a wash but standing Medeiros is superior. Expect Medeiros to slug his way to victory – likely in the second round after he softens Jackson up a bit.

UFC 177 Pick: Yancy Medeiros -120

UFC 177 Preliminary Card (8 PM ET, FS1)

Lorenz Larkin (14-3-0): -103
Derek Brunson (11-3-0): -117
Pick: Derek Brunson -117

Scott Jorgensen (15-9-0): +140
Henry Cejudo (6-0-0): -160
Pick: Scott Jorgensen +140

Ruan Potts (8-2-0): +170
Anthony Hamilton (12-3-0): -200
Pick: Anthony Hamilton -200

Joe Soto (15-2-0): -120
Anthony Birchak (11-1-0): +100
Pick: Joe Soto -120

UFC 177 Preliminary Card (Fight Pass, 7:30 PM ET)

Chris Wade (7-1-0): -122
Cain Carrizosa (6-0-0): +102
Pick: Chris Wade -122
