NFL Week 6 Fantasy Football Tips – Waiver Wire Week 6

This is our waiver wire pick-ups column. Dave B scours the free agent pools in fantasy land for the best available talent every week. Availability, of course, depends on the league. We’re using 12 team, 15 roster spot leagues as the median, but we’ll look for roster candidates for leagues of all shapes and sizes.

After all of the weekly games are finished be sure to check our cheatsheets, a who’s hot, and who’s not report plus more in our fantasy football guide.

Week 5 of the NFL was characterized by 2nd or 3rd offensive options coming up huge – leaving some of their teams 1st options disappointing. The trick this week is to choose the player that will be a focal point of their respective offenses going forward. Separate the legitimate Fantasy threats from the flash in the pans. Be wary of injury replacements and players that were utilized in blowouts – those who won’t otherwise see a lot of action.

So here we go with players that should be added to Fantasy rosters this week – leave a comment – let me know what you think!!

QB’s

Matt Cassell – Kansas City – Finally showing the fans of KC why they paid him the big $ in the off season. Although he did not guide his team to a win, he almost did enough to get them their elusive “W”. 253 yards and 2 tds. this week shows that he is gaining confidence with his team. Add in the fact that Cassel will get you a few yards rushing, and he could be a serviceable backup on Fantasy rosters.

Josh Johnson – Tampa Bay – Another bad team that seems to be playing a little better (OK that’s an overstatement!). With Antonio Bryant finally getting healthy and Kellen Winslow rounding into form, Johnson could surprise the occasional week. We all know that the Bucs are gonna be trailing in EVERY game – so they’ll be throwing a lot to try to catch up. Not a bad formula for a Fantasy QB.

Others to monitor – Mark Sanchez – NY Jets – Looks like the real deal. New toy Braylon Edwards doesn’t hurt either.

Chad Henne – Miami – Made a pretty good Jets Defense look ordinary.

RB’s

Tashard Choice – Dallas – Choice is a player that many were very high on a few weeks ago when Marion Barber and Felix Jones were banged up and figured to be out a while. Barber’s return scared many off. Now is your chance to grab him! Dallas clearly looks like a better team with Choice in the backfield – don’t think the coaches haven’t noticed. Week 5’s 92 yards and a td. on just 8 carries has cemented choice’s value as a Fantasy producer.

Ahmad Bradshaw – NY Giants – Might/Should be taken in most leagues, but if he’s not, snatch him up. He seems to be getting an almost equal carries split with Brandon Jacobs right now and is making the most of his opportunities. 165 combined yards and 2 tds. in Week 5 is proof. Its only a matter of time before Brandon Jacobs goes down with an injury – leaving Bradshaw owners licking their chops!!

Johnathan Stewart – Carolina – One half of the rushing duo that terrorized opposing Defenses last year, Stewart has been battling injuries since training camp. Declared fit and ready to go, Stewart scored in Week 5 (although not putting up great yardage totals). Add in the fact that DeAngelo Williams has been underwhelming this year, and Stewart could do some good things for your Fantasy team.

Others to monitor – Justin Forsett – Seattle Seahawks – Forsett carried the ball six times for 43 yards in the team’s Week 5 41-0 win over the Jaguars. It was the most yards that he had carried for in a game this season.

WR’s

Miles Austin – Dallas – Absolutely nuts!! Austin caught 10 balls (Romo only completed 20) for 250 freakin yards and 2 tds. – You do the math!! He will undoubtedly be the most sought after free agent this week.

Austin Collie – Indianapolis – Peyton Manning is masterful and as long as he hasn’t forgotten about you – he’s going to get you the ball. By Collie’s 8 catch, 97 yard 2 td. performance in Week 5, Peyton obviously hasn’t forgotten Austin Collie.

Jeremy Maclin – Philadelphia – What a breakout performance Maclin had in Week 5. 6 catches, 142 yards and 2 tds. bascially made DeSean Jackson irrelevant – and that’s not easy to do. With a declining Brian Westbrook and an oft-injured Kevin Curtis, Maclin has a realistic chance at being McNabb’s 2nd or 3rd option for the entire season.

Donnie Avery – St. Louis – Many that drafted him, then dropped him!! Now is your chance to possess the only real threat (outside of Steven Jackson) that the Rams have. Avery has all the talent in the world – only health and chemistry with revolving-door Qbs will stand in his way.

Chris Henry – Cincinnati – Somebody has to emerge in Cincinnati as Carson Palmer’s #2 option. Laverneus Coles has been silent, and Henry’s 93 yards on 3 catches was pretty loud. Give Henry some confidence and he could be a difference maker.

Others to monitor – Dennis Northcutt – Detroit —  Josh Morgan – San Francisco  —  Hackeem Nicks – NY Giants

TE’s

Ben Watson – New England – Watson recorded a 7-yard touchdown in the first half and finished with two catches for 13 yards. He remains more of a No. 2 Fantasy TE heading into Week 6 against the Titans. But he could do for a bye week fill in for sure.

Zach Miller – Oakland – He’s probably been dumped by most owners out there by now, in keeping with the mentality that NO Raider is worth owning, but listen to me here. Miller clearly was not suffering any lingering effects of the concussion and was the only receiver who got open for the Raiders vs. the Giants. He’s a decent bye week or injury-replacement option.

Defense

Packers + Jags D – Got your starting D on bye? Need a DST filler? Check out who they are both playing this week. You could do much worse.
