Top 20 Fantasy Rankings – Defense – Special Teams

It’s time again for Dave B to rank the top position players in the NFL and next up is the Defense – Special Teams (DST).

In Fantasy Football, defenses are often overlooked, but are essential for a winning fantasy squad. Add a Top three defense and you will not have to worry about them all season.

Failure to do so means scouring the waiver wires for weekly matchups – an arduous task at best.

Take a gander at Dave B’s Fantasy rankings to Defense/Special Teams and leave a comment, tell me if I’m on to something or if I’m full of crap!

Bye weeks are listed in brackets after the players name and team.

1. Baltimore Ravens (8) – The Ravens are a factor every year. They have an enormous defensive Line and a guy named Ray Lewis to get to the quarterback. The Ravens secondary will be among the leaders in interceptions again this season, and they should, like usual, return a few of those picks for touchdown. The Ravens are an obvious #1.

2. Philadelphia Eagles (8) – The Eagles were at or near the top of every defensive category last season and only got better. Add in the fact that DeSean Jackson will once again be returning kicks and you have a strong unit.

3. Minnesota Vikings (4) – The Vikings will return the same team that was impossible to run on and was responsible for more than its share of sacks. They are a big, athletic unit who will benefits from Lito Sheppard in the secondary. Percy Harvin is a threat in the return game too.

4. Green Bay Packers (10) – This could end up being the best fantasy unit this season. They have a knack for interceptions and for doing a lot with those picks. This is a defense full of play makers that has potential for a big, big year.

5. New York Jets (7) – The Jets were a pretty good squad last year and with the addition of Jason Taylor and Antonio Cromartie along with their solid draft, the Jets have an opportunity to eclipse last year’s numbers.

6. Chicago Bears (8) – It is hard to believe that the Bears have fallen so hard the last few seasons but the addition of Julius Peppers certainly helps their cause. Bryan Urlacher is healthy again and ready to terrorize. If the rest of this talented crew can put it all together, they will be a force this season.

7. Pittsburgh Steelers (5) – The Steelers have been one of the most solid units in the NFL for an eternity. If Troy Polamalu can stay healthy, they have a chance to be a Top Tier defense. Steeler’s fans would not accept anything else!

8. New Orleans Saints (10) – Greg Williams’ first season in New Orleans was a success and look for the D to improve even more this year. With the offense running up the score, the defense will prey on the chances the opposition has to take. Defensive touchdowns will result!

9. Dallas Cowboys (4) – One thing is certain – the Cowboys will get their share of sacks! Interceptions and turnovers have been lacking and there is no reason to think otherwise this year. They have some talented return men, making the Boys a Fantasy starter but not quite elite.

10. New York Giants (8) – Expect a bounce back year for the Giants who underachieved last season. Domenik Hixon is out for the season leaving the Special Teams with a huge hole. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

11. San Francisco 49ers (9) – The 49ers are an emerging team and with Mike Singletary at the helm, San Francisco should be a good defense. They play in an easy division and added Ted Ginn to return kicks.

12. Tennessee Titans (9) – They still have a lot of playmakers on defense but are a shadow of their 2007 defense. They will get plenty of interceptions as usual but have troubles getting to the quarterback – again!

13. New England Patriots (5) – They have gotten younger but unfortunately not much better. I have faith in Bill Belichek who knows his team’s weakness and will be working hard to rectify it.

14. San Diego Chargers (10) – The Chargers have taken a step backward with the departure of Antonio Cromartie but Shawn Merriman returns healthy. An extremely weak division helps their ranking immensely.

15. Indianapolis Colts (7) – The Colts have one of the most underrated defenses in the NFL. The defensive line is one of the best units in the game and with Bob Sanders finally healthy; they could vault up to starter status.

16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4) – This is a unit that is only a few years removed from a dominant season. They have a good mix of youth and experience but are a 3rd tier defense at best.

17. Cincinnati Bengals (6) – The Bengals stopped the run last season with great success and generated a few turnovers along the way. However, they remain a matchup only type defense.

18. Miami Dolphins (5) – Many people have the Fins ranked higher but I think that the youth on the squad will be their downfall. Mike Nolan is a defensive guru but playing in a tough division, Miami will look like an average squad by year’s end.

19. Arizona Cardinals (6) – The Cards have been formidable over the past few seasons but the departure of Karlos Dansby, Antrel Rolle and Bryant McFadden really hurts this squad. Add in the fact that Arizona will not be the offensive juggernaut of the past and it all points to a bumpy year for the Cardinals defense.

20. Cleveland Browns (8) – They are in the Top 20 because of one man – Joshua Cribbs is a Special Teams dream.
