NCAA Football Week One Wagering Action – Jacksonville State at Georgia Tech

The Jacksonville State Gamecocks, (6-5 SU, 5-3 Conf.) won just one game less than the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, (7-6 SU, 4-7-1 ATS, 6-5-1 O/U) in 2007 and could surprise their ‘big name’ opponents in this week one matchup judging by the team’s better-than-expected statistics from a season ago.

The Gamecocks averaged 305 total yards per contest, while allowing just 257 yards per game defensively and outscoring their opponents 27.7 points per game to 23.4.

Jacksonville State averaged 166.5 yards per game on the ground and another 172.0 through the air, and limited opponents to just 145.5 yards per contest on the grouns and 208.8 through the air.

The Gamecocks return six starters on each side of the ball, but none at the skill positions besides running back Daniel Jackson, full back Alphonso Freeney and tight end Deonte Carter. Jacksonville State also figures to have a strong defensive line with three starters returning.

The Gamecocks will face a Georgia Tech team that recorded some pitiful wagering statistics both at home, (1-5-1 ATS) and on the road, (3-2 ATS). The Yellow Jackets were just a bit better with Over/Under wagers, going 3-3-1 O/U home bets and 3-2 in O/U road wagers.

The Yellow Jackets have a new head coach in first-year leader Paul Johnson who made Navy a perennial winner before bolting for the greener pastures of big-time ACC football.

The Yellow Jackets’ defense ranked first in the nation in sacks and only allowed 114.5 rushing yards per game but lost the majority of their defensive starters from last season.

Georgia Tech will also be going with a first-time starter at quarterback in Taylor Bennett. The Yellow Jackets averaged 386.4 total yards last season, including 185.6 through the air and another 200.8 on the ground while averaging 26.2 points per game.

Defensively, Georgia Tech allowed opponents to average 334 total yards of offense per game, including 215.9 through the air and just 118.1 on the ground while averaging 20.8 points per contest.

Analysis: Despite the high line in this contest, I think the Yellow Jackets will roll to an emphatic victory over their overmatched opponents in this contest, though I will admit to the BetUS online NCAA college football sports wagering community that this game could turn out to be a bit closer than expected. In the end, I say take the Yellow Jackets to cover the spread narrowly.
