NCAAF: Georgia lacks title value

The Georgia Bulldogs are the AP’s number one team and 5:1 odds to win the national title, but is that a good value?

USC is the top betting choice to be national champs at 7:2, with Ohio State second at 4:1. Oklahoma is also 5:1.

Georgia coach Mark Richt’s returns 17 starters from arguably the best team in the country at the end of last season, and they are also riding a seven-game winning streak. Talent wise, the Bulldogs can easily lineup with any team even after losing offensive tackle Trinton Sturdivant for the season.

However, the Georgia schedule is extremely brutal this year and others are paying attention. Las Vegas Sports Consultants has Georgia ranked 7th, overall, as they base their rankings on where they think a team will finish the season.

Georgia’s first tough game is September 13th at #26 South Carolina. South Carolina handed Georgia one of its two losses last season, 16-12 in Athens as three-point underdogs. The Gamecocks have their best team since coach Steve Spurrier arrived in Columbia and he welcomes back 10 starters on defense. Also, five of the last seven meetings between these teams have been decided by six or less points.

The next game is at #15 Arizona State and Coach Dennis Erickson will have his team primed for national television. Sportsbook.com already has odds for this game and Georgia is favored by 5.5 points.

The SEC gauntlet begins in earnest in late September with a visit from #24 Alabama. Odds for this game are Georgia -10.

After a bye-week, #18 Tennessee arrives, and they hammered Georgia 35-14 last year in their only other loss. Revenge will be on the players minds, and Georgia is 12-6-1 ATS with an extra week of preparation in the regular season.

The ‘Dawgs’ are one-point dogs at #7 LSU on October 25th. This is not a bad thing as smart bettors are attuned to Richt’s teams being 22-3 straight-up in true visitor’s roles. The Bulldogs are also 7-2 ATS as road underdogs so this should be quite a battle.

The following week is in Jacksonville against #5 Florida, and Georgia is a 2 ½-point underdog. Note that Georgia has a 3-15 (6-11-1 ATS) record the last 18 seasons for this game, although they won 42-30 last year. Watch out for Florida in this game as they have as much pure talent as Georgia.

A final tough test is at Auburn on November 15th. Georgia is a slim one-point favorite against the AP’s 10th ranked preseason team.

So despite a wonderfully talented squad with a distinguished Head Coach, there’s a good chance Georgia drops a couple of contests, devastating their national title hopes.

Our advice is to pick another team to win the national championship, as this could be one ‘dawg-gone’ disappointing season for Bulldogs bettors.
