CFL Power Rankings: Week 7

There’s a shift at the top of the Week 7 CFL Power Rankings, as last week’s top two teams went head-to-head and saw the balance of power shift.

Here’s a look at the league’s power ratings

1 (2). Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Winnipeg climbs into first place after beating the Eskimos 28-16 last week. The Blue Bombers–who improved to 5-1 on the year–continue to be absolutely fantastic on defense, leading the CFL with just 18.8 points allowed per game. Big plays were the key to success against Edmonton, as Winnipeg racked up three interceptions, four sacks and forced three fumbles.

2 (1). Edmonton Eskimos

Edmonton was the CFL’s last undefeated team before last week’s 28-16 loss in Winnipeg. The Eskimos have been carried by an explosive offense this season, but quarterback Ricky Ray struggled to get it going against a tough Bombers “D”. Ray was picked off three times after throwing just one interception in his first five games combined. Ray gets another tough test this week against the Montreal Alouettes.

3 (4). Montreal Alouettes

Montreal rebounded from back-to-back losses to beat the Argos 36-23 in Week 6. The Als witnessed their offense return to form as Anthony Calvillo completed 30 of 36 passes for 349 yards and a touchdown. But witnessing Calvillo tear up the skies is nothing new; what is new is running back Brandon Whitaker. He rumbled for 150 yards on 19 carries against Toronto and leads the league with 493 rushing yards–at a whopping 6.8 yards per carry.

4 (5). Calgary Stampeders

The Stampeders climb two spots after dumping Hamilton 32-20 last week. Calgary improved to 4-2 and, more importantly, moved within a game of first-place in the West thanks to Edmonton’s loss. Henry Burris played as well as he has all season, throwing for 347 yards and a score. The Stamps could use more big plays on defense, though, as they had zero sacks, zero forced fumbles and just one takeaway.

5 (3). Hamilton Tiger-Cats

The Tiger-Cats may be the most schizophrenic team in the CFL. After losing the first two games, Hamilton won three straight–only to lay down and lose 32-20 in Calgary last week. The offense mustered just 292 yards, but perhaps a return to the Eastern time zone–and a date with hated rival Toronto–will wake up the Ti-Cats.

6 (8). British Columbia Lions

The Lions climb up the power rankings after a 24-11 win over Saskatchewan, the club’s first victory of the season. A stellar defense effort led the way, with the Lions racking up three sacks and holding the Roughriders to just a single touchdown. That’s a tremendous relief for British Columbia fans, but their team still ranks third-last in points allowed this season. [ad-4437448]

7 (6). Toronto Argonauts

Toronto’s offensive woes continued in last week’s 36-23 loss to Montreal. Cleo Lemon had a solid game statistically speaking (314 yards, two touchdowns, one pick), but the Argonauts still have the second-worst scoring attack in the CFL. If it wasn’t for garbage time–Toronto trailed 36-13 with about two minutes left in the game–the scoreboard would have looked even uglier.

8 (7). Saskatchewan Roughriders

The losses keep piling up for Saskatchewan. Last week was the lowest point yet, as the Riders allowed the CFL’s only winless team to get into the win column. The offense is nothing short of pathetic, averaging a league-worst 18.6 points per game. Darian Durant’s effectiveness as a starting quarterback has completely diminished, so it might be time for the Roughriders to look elsewhere.
