CFL Week 17 – Montreal Alouettes vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers Betting Preview

Its 2011 Canadian football gambling time once again. The Week 17 Montreal Alouettes vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers matchup. Both will be trying to pick up a win.

MONTREAL ALOUETTES (10-5) vs. WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (9-6)

In what is the most important of the CFL Week 17 games the Montreal Alouettes visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers with first place in the Eastern Conference on the line. A win for Montreal would lock up the East and give them home field advantage in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

A win for Winnipeg would at least clinch one home playoff date with the possibility of first place and a first round bye.

Montreal has been hot. After a mid-season stretch in which the team looked average, the Alouettes have reeled off four straight wins while scoring at least 27 points per game during the streak. Montreal is once again the highest scoring team in the CFL with an average of 30.8 points per game. Anthony Calvillo, Jamel Richardson and Brandon Whitaker will take care of their end of the bargain for certain on Saturday – it will be up to Montreal’s underwhelming defense to step up in this one. They are giving up an uncharacteristically high 24.5 points per game this season.

Winnipeg is a different team than the one that started the season like a house on fire. Fred Reid was lost for the season and Buck Pierce has been banged up to the surprise of nobody. Still, the Bombers have a chance to hold of Hamilton at worst and catch the Alouettes at best.

Unlike Montreal’s well oiled offense, Winnipeg still has some work to do. Buck Pierce is healthy but has been one of those rare breeds that has found success despite throwing more interceptions than touchdowns. Pierce has weapons and he should be able to find them against what has been a vulnerable Montreal defense this season. [ad-4437448]

Winnipeg’s defense has been great all season and is the real reason that they are still in contention for the Eastern Conference crown. They will be solid but will definitely have their hands full with the Montreal offense.

Betting Prediction: The Montreal Alouettes have won five of the last six games against the Bombers but are 0-4 ATS in their last four meetings. Montreal is 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven games at home but are just 4-3 SU in those games.

With all of the record surpassed, Anthony Calvillo and the Alouettes can concentrate on what they do best – play football. Despite a leaky defense, the Als are still an elite squad. I like them to get it done on Saturday. Not only will they clinch the division they will buy themselves a little time off for their aging superstar quarterback. Winnipeg’s fight for positioning will continue but unfortunately that fight won’t be for first place!

Pick: Montreal Alouettes -1
