Ole Miss @ South Carolina: Thursday Night Breakdown and Trends

This SEC Thursday Night ESPN clash could go a long way to determining post season hopes of both in 2009. Mississippi is coming in 3-0 straight up and ranked #4 in the nation. This is the first real test for the Rebels and heading into very hostile waters in Columbia, SC.

Oddsmakers have made South Carolina -3 point favorite to open and so far the line has not moved.

This game will be very interesting as the Rebels are great on offense and the Gamecocks are much better on defense. Also some interesting trends that must be taken into consideration before placing your wager this week.

The Ole Miss Rebels have a goal of winning the SEC and the National Championship this year. To do so they can’t afford a letdown verse a South Carolina team that is not one of the best in the SEC this year. Houston Nut is in his second year at the helm and he has changed the expectations. No longer is it good enough to just compete in the SEC he wants to be the best. In years past this is the type of game the Rebels would fall short in. Jevan Sneed is one of the top QB’s in the country and if his line gives him time he will shred the SC secondary.

Defense is a question for the Rebels as they did lose several players to graduation and the NFL.

Last year the Rebels were great on ATS check out the must know betting trends:

-Rebels are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite.
-Rebels are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 road games.
-Rebels are 9-2 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
-Rebels are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games in September.
-Rebels are 17-5 ATS in their last 22 games overall.
-Rebels are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 Thursday games.
-Road team is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
-Rebels are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games as a road favorite.

South Carolina bounced back last week after a disappointing loss at Georgia in week 2. Good news for bettors is the Gamecocks are 2-0 ATS and both games in conference this season they have played good enough to win. Coach Spurrier looks to have fixed the offensive woes of 2008 and the defense looks to again be very good. Thursday’s game will not be won by the SC offense; they must stop the Rebels high powered offense. If Spurrier can shelf his ego and play ball control offense they might just have a chance.

Check out betting trends for South Carolina:

-Gamecocks are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
-Gamecocks are 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games in September.
-Gamecocks are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 Thursday games.
-Gamecocks are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 conference games.
-Gamecocks are 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 games as a home underdog.
-Gamecocks are 0-4 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
-Underdog is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.

I just can’t see how South Carolina is a three point favorite against the #4 team in the country. Either the ranking is a joke, or their is a huge premium for the Gamecocks playing at home.

I just have to jump on Ole Miss in this one, but why do I feel it is a trap.

Go with the rebels, its not a trap.. South Carolina has a good coach, but not enough depth..

And for the editor.. the Rebels are 2-0. make sure to atleast have your facts right..

I agree Ole Miss is the way to go….but his line is wrong….Ole Miss is -3.5 not +3….gl with ur plays and don’t believe everything u read!

Hook em up!!!!

Sorry for the mistakes on this one fella’s…we’re not perfect.

Oddsmakers currently have the Rebels listed as 3½-point favorites versus the Gamecocks, while the game’s total is sitting at 53½.

Team records:

Mississippi: 2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS

South Carolina: 2-1 SU, 3-0 ATS

I agree totally Ole Miss has the edge here, no trap in my mind! Will be a shootout, these two always put up big numbers!
