Jay Cutler continues to throw interceptions:

Bears fans all thought Jay Cutler was their savior when he first came to town but once again made a number of mental mistakes that ultimately cost his team the game. Cutler threw for over 300 yards but was picked off by the San Francisco defense FIVE times! On the year, Cutler has now thrown more interceptions than touchdowns. He has 14 TD passes and a whopping 17 interceptions. The Bears drove the ball down inside the ten at the end of the game but when the Bears needed a big play out of their franchise quarterback, he threw another interception in the end zone.

Chicago is now 4-5 overall and simply don’t have any chance of catching the Vikings to win the division. They will most likely need to win 6 of their remaining 7 games to win the wild card but I don’t see that happening. The running game has been non-existent, averaging just a little over 85 yards a game and the defense has been decimated by injuries. It will be interesting to see how Cutler responds against another quality opponent on the big stage Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Cincinnati is the real deal:

I think everyone who was on the fence about exactly how good the Cincinnati Bengals are got their answer as the Bengals beat Pittsburgh for the second time this year on the road. Cincinnati now sits atop the AFC North Division at 7-2 SU and they also have been a great team to bet on going 6-3 ATS. The key for the Bengals’ success has been the complete turnaround their defense has made in 2009. They rank 2nd in the NFL in scoring defense and are one of the toughest defenses to run against. Cedric Benson is finally proving worthy of being a top 5 overall pick as he leads a rushing attack that is averaging 122.3 yards a game rushing. Carson Palmer is also doing a good job of managing the game and making plays when he needs to. He’s not putting up gigantic numbers but has thrown 14 touchdowns against only 7 interceptions. Cincinnati has had a hard time beating Pittsburgh and Baltimore in recent years but they are now 3-0 against those two teams this year.

New England outplays Indy but comes up short:

New England took a 31-14 lead over Indianapolis with 14 minutes to go in the game. It looked as if New England was the superior team all game long but the defense collapsed in the fourth quarter allowing Peyton Manning and company to score 21 fourth quarter points. Everyone has been talking about Bill Belichick’s decision to go for it on fourth down deep in his own territory with less than 2 minutes to play. Belichick is considered one of the best coaches of all time but I think he made a huge mistake in deciding to go for it on 4th and 2. He felt that if they could convert, they would win the game. However, with just a 6 point lead, the Patriots were unable to convert and gave Peyton Manning great field position. The Colts would go on to score a touchdown in the final seconds to give them a 35-34 victory. I’m all for having confidence in your offense but the smart move would have been to punt the ball away and force the Colts to drive a long distance to get the win. The Patriots dominated the Colts for three quarters but the defense ran out of gas in the final quarter and the Belichick decision didn’t do them any favors.
