NFL Matchups – Week 8

The NFL Elite is finally starting to separate themselves from the rest of a crowded field with Pittsburgh, New England, and New York (Jets) leading the charge in the AFC at 5-1. The NFC remains a bit more jumbled although New York (Giants) and Atlanta have established themselves as the early front runners at 5-2.

The following is a brief look at each matchup in Week 7 along with the current pointspread as supplied by BetUS.com.

Sunday, Oct. 31

1:00 P.M. Washington at Detroit (-3)
Over/Under: 44

Washington is 4-3 but is ranked 23rd in scoring; averaging 18.6 points per game. The Redskins defense is ranked 31st in average yards allowed but 10th in points allowed, giving up an average of just 19 points per game.

Detroit is 1-5 but ranked 10th in scoring; averaging 24.3 points per game and seventh in average passing yards per game. The Lions defense is ranked 25th in points allowed, giving up an average of 23.2 points per game.

Buffalo at Kansas City (-7 ½)
Over/Under: 44 ½

At 0-6 Buffalo is the only team in the NFL without a win. Three of the Bills losses have been by a combined 16 points, but their other three have been by a combined 61 points.

Kansas City’s 4-2 start is not a fluke. The Chiefs are ranked eighth in average points per game (25), 12th in total average yards per game (345) and first in average rushing yards per game (176.5). On defense they are ranked seventh in average points allowed per game (18.7).

Miami at Cincinnati (-2 ½)
Over/Under: 43 ½

Miami’s offense is averaging 342 total yards per game; 235 yards passing and 107 yards rushing, ranking them in the top half of the league in all three categories. Unfortunately the Dolphins are ranked 24th in the league in scoring, averaging just 18.5 points per game.

Cincinnati WR’s Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco have combined for 76 receptions for 988 yards and five TD’s, but their team only has two wins in its first six games to show for it.

Carolina at St. Louis (-3)
Over/Under: 37

Carolina got off the schneid with its first win of the season last week; a 23-20 win over San Francisco. Panther QB Matt Moore made the most of a second chance to start by completing 28-of-41 attempts for 308 yards and two TD’s.

St. Louis RB Steven Jackson had surgery on the ring finger of his left hand to repair a break. His status remains day-to-day for this game. Jackson has 617 yards on a 149 carries in seven games this season.

Green Bay at N.Y. Jets (-6)
Over/Under: 42 ½

Green Bay’s depleted defense lost two more players for the season when DE Mike Neal and LB Brady Poppinga went down with injuries that will require season-ending surgery in Sunday night’s 28-24 win over Minnesota. New York comes off its bye week with All-Pro CB Darrelle Revis declaring that his previously injured hamstring is now “100 percent”. Through six games the Jets defense is ranked 22nd against the pass and 12th overall.

Denver at San Francisco (-1)
Over/Under: 41 ½

Denver’s 59-14 loss to Oakland last week could be a new low point for a team that has now lost 13 of its last 17 regular season games after starting the 2009 season 6-0.

San Francisco QB Alex Smith remains questionable for Sunday’s game at Wembley Stadium in London, after injuring his shoulder in the 49ers 23-20 loss to Carolina. Backup David Carr would most likely get the start if Smith cannot go.

Jacksonville at Dallas (-10 ½)
Over/Under: 44 ½

Jacksonville’s brief run at respectability seems to have come to an end with blowout losses in its last two games. The Jaguars have been outscored 72-23 in back-to-back losses to Tennessee and Kansas City.

With QB Tony Romo on the shelf for at least six weeks with a broken collarbone, it will be up to journeyman John Kitna to try and turn the 1-5 Cowboys’ fortunes around. Considering this team went 1-4 with Romo in there, he really cannot do any worse.

4:05 P.M. Tennessee at San Diego (-3 ½)
Over/Under: 44 ½

Tennessee WR Kenny Britt had a career day last Sunday against Philadelphia with seven receptions for 225 yards and three TD’s. RB Chris Johnson ended the game with just 66 yards rushing on 24 carries for an average of 2.8 yards per carry, far below his 4.1 season average.

San Diego has been one of the hardest teams to figure out this season. The Chargers have the No.1 ranked offense and No. 1 defense in the league, but is tied with Denver for last place in the AFC West with a record of 2-5. NFL Betting

Minnesota at New England (-5)
Over/Under: 44

Brett Favre’s streak of starting 291 consecutive games is in serious jeopardy as he tries to recover from two fractures in his ankle. If he cannot go, Minnesota will turn to Tarvaris Jackson as its starter for this game.

Since returning to New England as a replacement for the departed Randy Moss, WR Deion Branch has 13 receptions for 137 yards and one TD. Wes Welker leads the team in receptions with 37, but TE Aaron Hernandez leads the team in receiving yards with 355.

Tampa Bay at Arizona (-3)
Over/Under: 40

Tampa Bay’s dramatic turnaround can be partially attributed to a pass defense that is ranked sixth in the league, giving up an average of just 196.2 yards per game. The Buccaneers’ turnover ratio is +6 which has certainly helped their cause as well.

Arizona’s offense is ranked dead last in both passing and total yards per game averaging just 146.2 yards through the air and 237.8 yards of total offense per game. The Cardinals have a turnover ratio of -7.

Seattle at Oakland (-1)
Over/Under: 42

Seattle has jumped to the front of the NFC West at 4-2 behind an offense that is ranked 27th. The Seahawks’ defense is ranked 19th overall but is fifth in points allowed and second against the rush.

The 59 points that Oakland’s put up in last week’s win over Denver were the most in franchise history. RB Darren McFadden was responsible for most of the damage with 165 yards rushing, 31 yards rushing, and four TD’s.

8:20 P.M. Pittsburgh (-1) at New Orleans
Over/Under: 43 ½

Since his return, Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger has completed 35-of-54 attempts for 559 yards and five TD’s in wins over Cleveland and Miami.

New Orleans’ offense is ranked seventh overall and fifth in passing, but the Saints are ranked 18th in scoring, averaging just 21 points per game. One of the most telling stats of why this team has already lost three games this season is a turnover ratio of -5.

Monday, Nov. 01

8:30 P.M. Houston at Indianapolis (-5)
Over/Under: 49 ½

Houston will be going for the series sweep of the Colts after beating them 34-24 at home on opening day. Last year they lost both games to Indianapolis by a combined 11 points.

Indianapolis QB Peyton Manning will be looking for some new targets to replace the injured Dallas Clarke and Austin Collie, who combined for 81 receptions for 850 yards and nine TD’s in the Colts first six games.

Bye Week: Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, N.Y. Giants, Philadelphia, and Cleveland
