THE NFL DOUBLE TAKE

Our writers continue to pad your pockets with winning picks on Sunday.

Last week it was Cras with a perfect 4-0 week against the spread (ATS) and now each writer enters Week 15 with more than respectable 30-23-3 records.

Here’s how they break down four of this week’s intriguing matchups:

San Francisco 49ers @ Miami Dolphins

Mike: Miami is tied with New England and the New York Jets at the top of the AFC East. They have also won six out of their last seven games, very impressive. Overall, the Dolphins have played far better than anyone expected, but I’m curious how they will play this week as the favorite and in a pressure situation.

I love how this San Francisco team is playing under new coach Mike Singletary. Shaun Hill has looked great at quarterback and they have won the last two weeks at Buffalo and home to the Jets. My one worry is the health of running back Frank Gore but I’m taking the points either way in a game that should be close.

Pick: San Francisco +6.5

Cras: San Francisco played good football the last two weeks, has covered the spread in four of the last five and that makes this a very interesting game as they could’ve easily packed it in weeks ago. Since being inserted into the lineup, quarterback Shaun Hill picked up where he left off last year and while he may not put up huge numbers, there’s no denying the team has played better with him leading the way.

With Miami playing for a playoff spot, you can bet that 49ers coach Mike Singletary will have his guys ready to play a spoiler role. I’m not going to go all out and predict a San Francisco victory but I do think they give the Dolphins a tough game and keep it within the number.

Pick: San Francisco +6.5

Tennessee Titans @ Houston Texans

Mike: Houston has played very solid the last three weeks, especially last week in Green Bay with quarterback Matt Schaub coming back from his injury. Schaub threw for 414 yards last Sunday and he must play great against the Titans to have a chance to win this game.

I’m a little surprised this spread isn’t a half point or full point higher. Tennessee has lost just one game this year and they should be able to run successfully on Sunday. As long as Kerry Collins doesn’t throw a couple of interceptions, the Titans should get the job done even in the hostile environment.

Pick: Tennessee -3

Cras: The Texans were my pick when they played the Titans in Tennessee back in September. Sure, the 31-12 Tennessee win looks lopsided but the game was much closer than the final tally.

Houston actually had a good chance to win the game but bad coaching decisions to go for it on numerous fourth downs, instead of kicking field goals, kept them down big and a Titans interception for a touchdown in the final two minutes iced it late. On home turf, and with better play calling, I think the Texans have the offense to get the job done this week.

Pick: Houston +3

Denver Broncos @ Carolina Panthers

Mike: Denver needs a victory this week to win the AFC West. The other option is for San Diego to lose at Kansas City which I don’t see happening. The Broncos are really banged up at running back and Tatum Bell could get the most carries, that’s a little scary.

Carolina is trying to go a perfect 8-0 at home this season and they are 4-2-1 ATS there. They are coming off perhaps the best game of the season in beating Tampa Bay on Monday Night Football. While I see Carolina winning this game as well, I see Jay Cutler making enough plays in the passing game to keep it fairly close.

Pick: Denver +7.5

Cras: Given the way the Panthers ran all over Tampa Bay last Monday, you’d think they could do even more damage against the Broncos defense, but the NFL is a totally different beast from week to week. That’s what makes this such a tough call.

Carolina has the record and the running backs to roll over the Broncos, but up until last Monday in primetime, they hadn’t really been impressive in building their 10-3 record. Their secondary is vulnerable and that’s why I like the Broncos offense to take advantage of Carolina’s pass defense and keep this game close.

Pick: Denver +7.5

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Baltimore Ravens

Mike: The one I thing I know about this game is it will be low scoring as the Over/Under is just 34.5, the lowest of the week. Also, these are two of the Top 3 defenses in the league and points are going to be at a premium, especially in the cold weather of the late afternoon.

I really can’t see either team running the ball at all in this game. That means quarterback play is going to be the key and I have to take Ben Roethlisberger over rookie Joe Flacco, no matter how good Flacco has played. I’m actually surprised Pitt is the underdog here and I’m willing to take the points.

Pick: Pittsburgh +2.5

Cras: Their first meeting was one of the best games of the season so far as Pittsburgh squeaked out a 23-20 overtime victory at home. Since then, both defenses have led these teams to the top of the AFC with Pittsburgh looking for a first-round bye and the Ravens also in position for the division crown with a win Sunday.

Ultimately, Baltimore falls short of the crown as they lose this game at home. With the defenses basically matching each other, this game comes down to which team has the better offense and we all know that Pittsburgh has the better quarterback and wide receivers while the running backs are basically a tossup at this point.

Pick: Pittsburgh +2.5
