Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers
7:05 PM ESPN

Starting Pitchers
CWS: E. Jackson (6-10, 5.16)
DET: A. Galarraga (3-3, 4.28)

The last time these two clubs met the Tigers were fighting it out for top honors in the AL Central, but oh my how things have changed, as the White Sox currently lead the division by seven games over flailing Detroit.

The Tigers, who after Tuesday mornings 12-2 shellacking in the series opener, climbed back to .500 by winning game two of the doubleheader 7-1. It was just their second win in their last six games.

Now Detroit will look to record two consecutive wins for the first time since July 21, by winning the series finale on Wednesday evening at Comerica Park.

It won’t be easy as Chicago is currently playing some of their best ball of the season, turning around a poor start by winning two of three against Detroit in early June, on their way to erasing a 9-1/2-game deficit to take the division lead before the All-Star break.

Before falling to the Tigers in game two, Chicago had won two of three against Oakland over the weekend, capping a 6-1 home stand with a 4-1 victory Sunday. However, they have struggled against their AL Central foes where they are 17-21, including a 7-13 record on the road.

Meanwhile, Detroit who has dropped 15 of 20 is battling a string of injuries that have plagued the club for much of the second half.

The Tigers’ current lineup is held together by Miguel Cabrera, who is been on a cooling trend, hitless in his last six at-bats with just one home run in the sluggers last six games. Beyond him the rest of the lineup is extremely inexperienced. Rookie Brennan Boesch has also hit a wall to the point of being irrelevant in the lineup despite being a caliber hitter in the first half of the season.

Now the Detroit offense will get their best chance of the series, as they will face newly acquired starting pitcher Edwin Jackson. Chicago picked up the 27-year old in a trade with Arizona last Friday. The right-hander has exceptional stuff, but has been known to have control problems, issuing 60 walks in 134 1/3 innings pitched while with the Diamondbacks. That’s more than four walks per nine innings, well above the league average. All Detroit needs to do is stand in the batter’s box.

Recently Chicago’s lineup has been red hot since the All-Star break as displayed by their 12-run foray in the day game of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

The Tigers will hope that veteran Armando Galarraga can duplicate Jeremy Bonderman’s efforts of game two, shutting down the Chicago offensive surge. The right-hander has been dealing with some soreness and swelling in his right ankle after taking a liner on Friday night in Boston, but has been cleared to play. Galarraga is 1-2 in four career starts against the White Sox.

Chicago vs. Detroit MLB Free Pick

It’s unlikely the Tigers will tally up another seven-runs, but I do see them scratching across three or four versus Jackson. Take Detroit and the UNDER.
