Kentucky Derby Gambling Props – Prop Sheet Betus Racebook

Here are some hot prop bets to consider for the 2010 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 1st…

Kentucky Derby Prop Betting Special

Does it seem absurd to bet on props in the Kentucky Derby instead of the straight up race? Well, considering we’re wagering on tiny men riding beasts around a track, it shouldn’t! This Saturday will be the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby from Churchill Downs in Louisville; horse racing’s premier event is for three-year-old thoroughbreds.

Here are some hot prop bets to consider.

WILL THE WINNING HORSE NUMBER BE ODD OR EVEN?

Odd number: -110
Even number: -110

The favorite, Lookin at Lucky, is in position No. 1, but I’d go even here.

The second biggest favorite is Sidney’s Candy; he’s in the No. 20 position.  Two other horses I love, Ice Box and Awesome Act, are both listed at even numbers.

With three legit contenders at even numbers, those are solid odds.

Pick: Even number -110

WHERE WILL THE WINNING HORSE’S NUMBER FALL?

1-5: +145
6-10: +625
11-15: +285
16-20: +225

Hate to play it safe here but I feel the odds are best with the 1-6 range.

Lookin at Lucky has legendary trainer Bob Baffert on his side, not to mention six wins in his last eight races.

Also, Ice Box falls in that range and I feel great about his chances this week. More on him later.

Pick: 1-5 +145

INDIVIDUAL HORSE FINISH PROPS

Where will Lookin at Lucky finish?

Over 3.5: -130
Under 3.5: +100

I was surprised to see a top-three finish as the underdog in this prop. Looking at Lucky just has so much going in his favor that I’d be shocked if he didn’t contend.

Maybe sportsbooks are scared off after Mine That Bird shocked the world?

Pick: Under 3.5 +100

Where will Ice Box finish?

Over 7.5: -115
Under 7.5: -115

I’m all over Ice Box this weekend; in fact, he’s almost my pseudo-sleeper pick to win this race, as he combines better value than most favorites with some legitimate reasons to support him.

He has a great trainer in Nick Zito and recently won the Florida Derby. Zito says Ice Box reminds him of another Derby winner he trained – Strike the Gold in 1991.

That horse placed second in the Florida Derby that year.

Pick: Under 7.5 -115

Where will Awesome Act finish?

Over 6.5: -115
Under 6.5: -115

Awesome act is an interesting up-and-comer. He showed his moxie when he lost a shoe at the Grade 1 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct yet still finished third.

He also has a win, two seconds and a third over his last six starts. I could totally see him cracking the top six.

Pick: Under 6.5
