NBA news: Magic will not trade Dwight Howard
It’s fun to speculate on wild trade rumors involving 2012 free agent Dwight Howard but the Orlando Magic insist that they will not trade their superstar center.
Howard has indicated he’s open to rejoining the team but that he wants to be surrounded with better players and that he’d like to be involved in personnel decisions.
Cavs to grab Irving at No. 1
Not that it’s a big surprise, but it’s almost official now that the Cleveland Cavaliers will take Duke point guard Kyrie Irving at first overall in this week’s NBA draft.
That means they’ll let Arizona forward Derrick Williams fall to Minnesota at No. 2.
Suns to buy out Vince Carter
Vince Carter’s star sure has fallen a long way. The former Rookie of the Year has averaged 22.2 points with Toronto, New Jersey, Orlando and Phoenix since starting his career in 1999. But he’s fallen out of favor to the point that he’s expendable in the desert.
The Suns plan to decline the $18-million option on Vince’s contract and buy him out for $4 million.
Carter is expected to attract interest from contending teams in need of a bench scorer. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

MLB news: Albert Pujols out with fractured forearm
The St. Louis Cardinals feared the worst when Albert Pujols injured his arm in a collision with Kansas City’s Wilson Betemit on Sunday.
As the season nears its halfway mark, the standings – and the power rankings – look less and less surprising and more and more like we thought they’d look before the season started.
Long live Jim Barker. The 2010 Coach of the Year was the single biggest reason for the Toronto Argonauts’ return to relevance last season. Sure, Toronto only went 9-9 and lost seven of its final 11 regular-season games, but the team won seven games in 2008 and 2009 combined.
The New York Yankees are heating up at the right time. The Boston Red Sox are on fire and they thumped the Bronx Bombers over and over last week to gain the American League East lead, so the Yankees’ 6-1 run since then is well-timed.
The Toronto Blue Jays are more or less where we thought they’d be at this point of the season, not truly contending in the American League East but remaining a competitive pest for the juggernauts.
NBA news: Blazers waiting on Oden offer
There’s no guarantee that the Portland Trail Blazers will keep oft-injured former first-round pick Greg Oden on board next season.
NHL news: Wild hire Mike Yeo as head coach
The Minnesota Wild have their new head coach: Mike Yeo. After serving as an assistant with the Pittsburgh Penguins for five seasons, including the 2009 championship year, he took over as coach of the AHL’s Houston Aeros.
No sooner has the dust – not to mention the fire and blood in the streets of Vancouver – settled after Boston’s Stanley Cup victory that the 2012 odds to win it all are posted.
While they haven’t been perfect, the Milwaukee Brewers have settled in as one of the National League’s better teams, going 23-9 over their last 32 games.
The Chicago White Sox are back in the American League Central hunt, partially because their play has improved and partially because the Cleveland Indians have predictably faltered.
As a team that really fell on some hard times during the 2000s and hasn’t won the Grey Cup since 1999, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have potential to be a nice redemption story in 2011. They quietly started last season 1-4 before rallying to go 8-5 over their final 13 games.
NFL news: David Tyree says same-sex marriage will lead to “anarchy”
David Tyree will always be remembered for his circus catch to help the New York Giants win Super Bowl XLII.
But, now, he’ll also be remembered for his controversial opinion on same-sex marriage.
NBA news: Shaq questioned in gang-beating case
This week in a Los Angeles County Superior Court, a man named Robert Ross testified that Shaquille O’Neal and his business partner, Mark Stevens, were responsible for him being beaten, robbed and kidnapped.
NHL news: Vancouver Loses The Cup – Hooligans Start Riots
It was quite an end to the NHL season last night. Following the Boston Bruins’ Game-7 victory over the Vancouver Canucks to capture the Stanley Cup Final in Vancouver, the city erupted into riots and violence.
