NFL Football Betting Futures 2008 – AFC Quarterback Hot Seat
For all that the AFC is chalked up to be, there are still some major flaws on many of the teams, which definitely factors into sports betting and how to bet on football cautiously. Namely, the quarterback position is one of great risk. You screw up at this position once, and you’re virtually screwed for years to come. Just ask the Cleveland Browns, who finally struck gold in one year with two different players. Does that mean Derek Anderson is safe? No.
First off, I’m taking the following guys immediately off the hook:
Jamarcus Russell – Has talent, but more importantly the faith of Al Davis
Trent Edwards – Nobody’s going to be upset if he tanks…not that he will
Jay Cutler – Are you crazy?
Vince Young – No receivers won’t phase the face of the franchise one bit.

Here are the guys that need to be worried. Some of these guys might be online football betting surprises, but at least being cautious will get you thinking before you lump money in to our sportsbook NFL futures.
Derek Anderson – Cleveland Browns
Anderson went simply ballistic last season by launching the leather for 3,787 yards passing with 29 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. The Browns were relentless through the air, and added Donte Stallworth to compliment the duo of Kellen Winslow Jr. and Braylon Edwards.

What that means for Anderson is that he has no excuses. Even with a contract extension in pocket, and a trio of talented receivers, Brady Quinn looms over his shoulder. If the young Anderson stumbled consistently, Quinn will be more than happy to take the reigns. And Browns management will be more than willing to give to him.
Browns Winning AFC Championship: +1600 (very good value, if you feel risky)
Chad Pennington – New York Jets
For a guy who can’t throw the ball farther than 17-yards, and gets picked off every time he tries to throw an out route, Pennington still finds himself competing for the starting job. Is Kellen Clemens that bad? No, but Pennington is that smart. He’s cerebral, which is hard to find these days. While Pennington is a very smart quarterback, he still threw for 10 scores and 9 picks.
That’s far better than the 5 touchdowns and 10 picks that Clemens threw for last season. If Pennington is shaky at all, even behind Faneca and a revamped offensive line, Clemens will get the ball. Especially if Mangini is in the hot seat as well.
Jets Winning AFC Championship: +6000 (that’s about right…God, I hate the Jets)
Who Knows – Baltimore Ravens
Kyle Boller was miserable last year, throwing for 9 scores and 10 scores on 1,743 yards passing. Now that Air McNair has been grounded (I know…”how original…”), Boller looks to be the one taking the helm, right? Wrong.
Troy Smith played far better in the final few games for Baltimore than Boller could ever play. Smith is a smart player, who overcomes his stature problems by possessing a fast release on his passes, quick feet and by making good reads. Smith threw for 40-for-72 attempts and scored two touchdowns, and looked very sharp. Smith could surprise some people this year, which means big trouble for Boller.
If neither of them pan out, it’s big trouble in Baltimore for their betting backers.
Ravens Winning AFC Championship: +2500
Carson Palmer – Cincinnati Bengals
“What?! Are you insane??” Nope. Not one bit. If anything, I’m confused. With the Bengals falling apart at the seams, where has Palmer been this whole time? He’s the supposed leader of a team that tanked it last season. Now the Bengals betting faithful are getting infinitely more concerned, especially with the defense crumbling and Chris Henry out the door.
If Chad Johnson follows suit via trade, everyone will be pointing the finger at Palmer, who obviously couldn’t lead a horse to water. He certainly won’t lead the Bengals to the playoffs. And he won’t lead the betting faithful of Cincy to the profit land.
Bengals Winning AFC Championship: +2200 (they have better chances of getting more arrests)
Philip Rivers – San Diego Chargers
Hey may have the good graces of management right now, but if he can’t lead them to the AFC Championship, it’ll be his head that the fans are calling for. Between Merriman, Chambers, LDT, Jammer and everyone else on a loaded Chargers team, Rivers has been a questionable quarterback at best. Sure, he’s had his moments. But when Billy Volek came out and led the Chargers past the Colts, my questions marks about Rivers got bigger.
If Volek can lead this team past the Colts in the playoffs, why can’t Rivers help dominate this team overall? It’s just a burning question with me. It should be with too you before you jump all over the Chargers in the sportsbook.
Chargers Winning AFC Championship: +450 (They’re second to the Patriots for a reason…Rivers isn’t it)
