MLB Betting Power Ratings: Week 22
A look at the five best and worst bets in the bigs
Sept. 7, 2007
By Carlisle Richards
Bodog Nation Contributing Writer
When September rolls around, bettors are usually ready to drop MLB betting like Byron Leftwich and gear up for football season. Slow down. There’s still money to be made on baseball.
So before you put your cash to work on Sunday, check out some of the hottest and coldest bets in baseball for Week 22:
Five Best Bets
5. Boston Red Sox
How do you want to finish? That’s the only question bettors need to ask the Red Sox. They’ve done well in their last 13, going 8-5 straight up, and they have the best record in baseball at 84-56. However, they haven’t had a winning streak longer than five games all season, which makes them difficult to bet on.
Their remaining schedule should help things out. Sixteen of their last 22 games are against teams below .500. The only matchup bettors need to avoid is the always unpredictable Yankees/Red Sox series starting Sept. 14.
4. New York Mets
After dragging themselves through the regular season, the Mets appear to be serious about maximizing their talent and making noise in October. They had a big hiccup in late August (they lost five games in row) but have heated up since then. They’ve won five of their last six, and their remaining games should help them finish their season on a high note. Fifteen of them are at home and 16 are against sub-.500 teams.
3. New York Yankees
After tearing the league a new one in early August, the Yankees cooled on the road against the Tigers and Angels. They’ve gone 6-3 since, including a series sweep of the Red Sox. They should get more victories with sub-.500 squads Kansas City and Toronto on the schedule before they come back to Boston for another tough series against the Red Sox. Place your bets until then.
2. Cleveland Indians
Rewind back three months and the general conclusion was that the AL Central would come down to a heated battle between the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians. But today, it’s not even close. The Indians have the AL Central locked up like Michael Vick, and they did it by winning 16 of their last 20, nine of their last 10 and going 12-8 on the runline.
1. Los Angeles Angels
The Angels have their “Angel ball” (aka “small ball”) working in full effect, and it has them firmly in place to grab the AL West. They’ve won seven of 10 and have pulled away from the imploding Seattle Mariners. Once they finish their series versus Cleveland on Sept. 9, only Seattle could disrupt their cruise to the finish line.

Five Bad Bets
5. Florida Marlins
The end of the regular season couldn’t come any faster for the Marlins. They’ve lost 16 of their last 20 and 80 of 140 overall. The only time you should remember them is when the Miami Dolphins pass the 30 at home.
4. Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Wow, the Devil Rays are on fire. They’ve won 10 of 14 and have gone over the total in 10 of the last 14. But don’t be fooled, even a garbage can gets tossed a steak once in a while.
The Rays still haven’t won enough to push themselves out of the bottom five. Plus, after their series against Toronto, they should fall right back to Earth with their next 10 on the road.
3. Pittsburgh Pirates
This team was never great to begin with, but Jason Bay’s lack of progress (just 20 homers and a .254 batting average) has made them horrible. They’ve managed to grab some wins at Houston and Colorado in late August, but shortly after it was back to brutal. They’ve lost six of eight, and their next three series are against squads desperate for wins – the Cardinals, Cubs and Brewers.
2. Chicago White Sox
Questions have surfaced about the White Sox lacking fire. I just think they lack offense. The Sox rank second to last in runs scored at 4.17 per game. That’s light-years from the third-ranked offense they had in 2006 with the same squad. The M.I.A. bats have contributed to 11 losses in their last 15, and a 59-80 record overall.
1. Baltimore Orioles
I always find it difficult to write something interesting about the Orioles, despite the fact they’ve appeared numerous times on my “worst bets” list. It’s probably because they have the baseball equivalent to an Aaron Sorkin drama: a mediocre cast coupled with a season lacking highs, lows or memorable moments. Granted, there was that historical 30-3 loss against the Texas Rangers on Aug. 22, but I doubt they’d like anyone to remember that.
