Tonight’s matchup between the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs offers an interesting look at two teams that are both currently in the midst of major rebuilding modes.
The Miami Dolphins will likely play starting quarterback Trent Green for nearly an entire half against his former team in an effort to get their sub par offense ready for the season opener in less than a month.
Though the Dolphins won their preseason opener last week, beating the Jacksonville Jaguars 18-17, Green went just 6-for-14 on his pass attempts including a fumble and interception. While Miami managed to cover as 2 ½-point underdogs, the Dolphins can’t be too encouraged by what they saw, particularly from their first-team offense.
“We’re hoping to make improvements from week to week and get ready for the opener,” Green told reporters this week. “Understand that this is the preseason and we are growing. We are a group of new guys on offense and a lot of young guys, so it’s going to be a growing process.”
While the Dolphins are trying to build some cohesiveness on offense, the Chiefs are just trying to figure out who their starting quarterback will be.
Head coach Herman Edwards has a quarterback dilemma on his hands as he tries to gauge whether the young Brodie Croyle is ready to start or whether veteran Damon Huard is capable of leading his team to a winning season.
“I think this game is big for both of them,” Edwards told reporters. “There is no doubt about it. If one surfaces, obviously you start leaning, well maybe that’s the guy, maybe that’s not the guy.”
Edwards plans to play Huard the first quarter with Croyle relieving him. Croyle went 5-of-8 for 49 yards last week and threw an ugly interception while Huard wasn’t much better, going 2-for-4 for 19 yards with an interception of his own. Chiefs’ superstar running back Larry Johnson continues his contract holdout.
Analysis: I like the Dolphins to win this game tonight based on their stout defense. Though neither team’s starters will see much more than a quarter and a half of action, Miami’s strong defensive should be able to shut down both Croyle and Huard long enough for one of Miami’s backups to pull out the win.
